I have a building merchant with a truck which needs signing up. problem is would it be okay to apply vinyl on a painted but non smooth surface?? I have attached a pic below of how the surface of the truck looks like.

as long as there is no rust, it will be fine, the vinyl will show the rough surface, but if the paint is rough anyway, not problem

I take it I will need quite a bit of heat to make sure it settle’s in with the rough surface peter.

    thanx for your reply

Compare to that what I’ve done lately on rubbish collectors truck your surface it’s absolutely smooth 🙂

Use any 7 years vinyl (or cast). Just in case keep heat gun close to you and you will be fine.

Just aware customer it may come off.

not essential. and probably not a good idea, you may blister the paint!
just use a reasonable quality vinyl, and if you think it needs it, only some mild heat to finish

The life of the vinyl depends greatly on the surface its adhered too.

if that’s a gloss painted corrugated drop-sided pickup for instance… yeh, it will take to it. but will chip and flake along with the paintwork.

if its just poor metal work, but properly buffed, primed and sprayed then again, yes… it will adhere, and much better than above. live will be longer etc

I have had adament customers come in insisting we apply vinyl to crap painted drop sides and more. and i mean thse were bad! trying to remove the application tape was removing paint never mind anything else. still they paid and that was that. i bet they never got one pressure washes life out of the vinyls. but they were warned and warned well… its all you can do, if you don’t, they will be back and you will get the blame.

we did one last week and as Rob says the biggest problem for us was the paint coming off with the application tape, we applied wet after that and that helped! but if you warn the customer there should be no problems!

I’d be using a cast on this surface too. But I’ve done worse surfaces. As others have said, make it clear to the client the job will only last as long as the worst of the paint job.
