Is there vinyl that can be driven on
Posted by Ewan Chrystal on 20 July 2013 at 00:09Is there such a thing as heavy duty vinyl that can withstand vehicles driving over it?
Thanks
Ewan

Hi Ewan
This really depends on the application such as:
If it’s going on a road what’s is the surface made from?
How much through traffic is expected to drive over the graphics?
Will it be cars, lorries or mixture of vehicles?
How long do u want the graphic to last?
Is it a digital image or solid colours?
Size of graphic? These really new to be answered first before I can say.
In the past iv used avery wall wrap ten once applied use road marking clear resin and coat the print especially the edges. There’s a few ways so let me know the details

Hi Adam, the customer wants to apply it to a hard rubber speed bump. It will be subject to everything from bikes to buses – all at low speed obviously. It is at the entrance to a tourist attraction so if i can get it to last a season would be good.
Expect around 200 vehicles daily. It will be solid colours, no graphics. The size will be quite large with no intricate details -
That’s what I said Cheryl but they want to look at the vinyl option

Vinyl would be very slippery, especially when wet. I wouldn’t even think of doing something like that. Too much risk in my opinion.

Ive done a workshop floor in Hexis Ecotac series…it is flat and painted and gets massive lorries turning on it…I told the customer that it was untested in this sort of application but he said he didnt mind, he just needed it for one job. It is still there a year later, grubby with the odd tear where they have dragged heavy equipment, but what workshop doesnt get this sort of wear. If this guy/lady insists on looking at vinyl…be honest, say its untested but give it a go…If he loves it and it lasts 4 months, you could be giving yourself repeat work….but no guarantees, especially with this sort of traffic, might do to mention the slip risk which has been rightly pointed out.

You could try Arlon DPF8000 (or any other super high tack vinyl) with a floor laminate over the top.

Hi All,
Avery Street Graphics might do the trick no one has mentioned it , warrantied for 3 months being driven on and 6 months being walked on , doesnt need an overlaminate , best on a road though rather than speed bumps , it micro fractures on the surface to conforn to the rough surface which also keeps the grip , its also biodegradable so when finished just power wash it away. designed for UV ink and its harder wearing.
Cheers

Thanks for all the info everyone. I have given the customer all the available info. I am trying to steer him in the direction of stencils and paint.
they want them to be moveable and want them on some form of substrate.
I think it’s one of those jobs that will end up not happening.
They want me to put vinyl on rubber matting that isn’t slippy, can be driven on and will last 6 months
hang on i’ll get my magic wand out 🙂 -
You can get prints on carpet, seen them up at the show. They would last for 6 months easy and can be placed anywhere.
