    Hi all,

Im very new to this, and only have a baby robo at the moment although I’ve just about outgrown it in the few weeks I’ve had it. I bought it primarily for tshirt flex/flock for which is is ok. However, I recently got a new car and decided to put a few company logos on it. Prior to finding this site, I ordered some vinyl and app tape and whilst I had to patch together the vinyl to make it all big enough for my decal it worked fine apart from the app tape didnt seem sticky enough.
I have since had a play with a few small stickers and even if I squeegee it like mad the app tape lifts away from the backing leaving a lot of the vinyl behind. Unfortunately I went in a bit blind and bought "some vinyl" and "some app tape" the vinyl is multi-fix (or so it says on the back) and the app tape I have no idea, it was just sold as app tape. It is the paper kind. I am assuming it is of the lower tack variety. I do have plans other than my car, and if things work out I’ll be after a decent cutter sometime soon, but in the meantime the robo will do for experimenting, and to this end I could do with some tape that lifts the vinyl off rather than leave it behind. Can anyone reccomend any that comes in small sizes (200mm or so). I would also like to try some of the clear type as I had a bit of a job lining it up on my car since I couldnt see throught it! Opinions on the vinyl I got would also be appreciated.

    Thanks

ask for a medium tack app tape next time you buy some. That should help. Also one other tip….. which you may do already, is this. Rather that lift the app tape from the backing, flip it over and roll back the backing paper from the app tape. 😀 You’ll find this works better.

It’s a battle here between the folks that make the graphics and want it to unroll easily, and the fitters who want it as high tack as possible.

After much violence, and blood on the carpet, they’ve called a truce and compromised on Conform 4075RLA

    Perfectear 75

    The only one we use.

    Hi All,

I am using perfectear application tape along with LG 7000 series vinyl and are having to always fit wet as the minute the vinyl touches a vehicle panel it seems to grab and comes away from the application tape, is there a better application tape perhaps with a higher tack level so that if I have not got a design positioned square then I can keep lifting it until I get it right.

    Hi Chris,

Can you let me know what he says, I am new to all this and thought it was me rather than the application tape.

Been using Ritrama paper hi-tack tape for ages. Gone through umpteen logs of it & no complaints.

I use R-Tape Conform medium tac.
    I often apply wet.
I have tried the clear stuff and I really despise it.
It’s totally impractical for a wet app.
I’m getting better at applying dry tho.

Many thanks for all the replies. Looks like I’ll be ordering a couple of types to try and figure out which suits me best.
Why is it so many seem to dislike the clear tape? I would have thought with it being clear it would have made lining up much easier?

for small stuff its fine and helpful because its a plastic i find it stretches then not helpful.
application tape is a very expensive bin liner 😀

I wish the manufacturers would spend as much time developing a good app tape as they do fancy new types of vinyl.

Conform 4075 is annoying me at the moment, the lay flat properties are great but someone needs to tell them how to make a pressure sensitive glue. I find this stuff doesn’t release lettering from the backing very well but it does stick too firmly to everything else. Fitting dry is very difficult on dibond/acrylic etc. as you really have to put a lot of effort into repositioning.

Maybe I’ll give Perfectear another try next.

That’s normally more down to technique than the tape in my experience. As a rule, NEVER lift tape back up vertically – ALWAYS pull it horizontally to break any stuck patches. That way you never (very rarely) lose any vinyl – works on anything from little 3mm letters to large 3m lengths.

i dont dislike it…i love it…but only for fast jobs in workshop, i keep loads of different sizes of logs….its a god send when doing signs in a hurry, but i swear by the paper too for other work…..i just boil it down to preference and what im used too i suppose 😀

Another quicky before I buy some new rolls of tape, If I am making one that I want to give so someone else ready for them to apply themselves, which is a good tape to use, will the medium tack paper tape be ok? The no name tape I have doesnt stick too well to the backing, especially at the edges. I am assuming I have a low tack tape but until I have something to compare it with I dont know for sure.

    Thanks

    Egg,

That’s something I should have included in my previous post. I mentioned the differing priorities of my staff, but omitted my own. I want an app tape to lay flat, so that decals we send out to customers look reasonably professional.

Various factors other than the tack of the tape will affect that. Some, such as humidity, we have no control over but others, like the type of adhesive and the thickness of the paper are areas where you can exercise a certain amount of choice.

Like I said, app tapes are all a compromise but if you stick to good branded ones, some of which are mentioned above, you shouldn’t go far wrong. Try them all in turn and you will soon decide which is best for your own circumstances.
