is there a vinyl which can be applied to kayaks?
Posted by Martin Armitage on 15 July 2005 at 09:12We made some self adhesive stickers for a kayaking hire company last year to go on their Kayaks which i suppose would take a fair battering over a year, apparently these are now starting to perish at the edges and they now need a few samples using a better vinyl. Oracal 851 was recommended to us and used last time, is there anything more suitable i could use, thanks in advance,

you have used a high performance cast vinyl made. if thats being abused to the point its showing wear and tear i doubt yuo will have the perfect solution, no matter what you use. have you thought about creating a stencil and painting it on?

The logo is a bit too complicated for that, they are saying that the original stickers that came with the kayaks were much harder wearing than the ones I supplied last year.

that being the case mate could it not be this other sort of vinyl that they use on motorcycles etc havent a clue what it is but i think i remmebr forbie and some others discuss it. not your run of mill sign makers stuff though…

Convex make an extreme stick vinyl for printing, but should be laminated too.
Brilliant stuff. Made for plastic motor bike tanks and anything that normal vinyl has problems with.
Not cheap, but the bees knees when you need it to stick to unusual surfaces.

Thanks for the replies, who are “convex” i can find references to them on the web but no website!

Danger UK make motorcross bike stickers, they are very hard wearing and very thick. The ones I removed from my bike seemed to be a printed base with a thick laminate.

Motorbike Plastics and polyethylene outgas (like my grandad used to 😮 ) throughout their life. Normal vinyl adhesive aparently can’t handle this and the gas interferes with the adhesive lifting edges etc.
The Convex stuff that Shane mentioned is the dogs b@llocks so they say. As near to a factory sticker that you can get.
I believe Oracle deal in it.
Hope that helps.
Good old grandad 😀

Scozzie is correct in that Oracal distributors handle it here in queensland, but I am not sure if it is actually an oracal product.
A few in the UK use it I know, but as to who sells it there, I have no idea.
This is the description from our local distributors site
‘CONVEX High-Bond Opaque White Print Vinyl HIGH-BOND Convex™
This vinyl has a special adhesive that is very-high tack, is non-slip and has excellent adhesion to low energy plastics such as motor bike fenders and number plates. High Bond also adheres well to powder-paint coated surfaces found on many machinery surfaces. It has 2 mils of adhesive as opposed to 1 mil for better bonding on rough textured surfaces.
Laminate with CONVEX 8mil laminate or Convex Pro-Shield.If you can not source it let me know, and I’ll ask my local distributors if they know of any contacts in the UK. They are a really helpful bunch here, and are always willing to help if they can

Yeah Convex is very sticky different grades and the same for the laminates Graphic marking systems is the web site
http://www.graphicms.com there is a supplier in Ireland and supposed to be new ones to the uk sometime soon as far as I can make out. If you know anyone who goes to Dublin regularily get them to get it a roll of 6 mil Convex and a roll of laminate cost me £80 for delivery cheaper going over and getting it myself at that price
Sign + Digital 23a Crag Cresent Clondalkin DublinAlthough it is good it needs meticulous cleaning of the surface before application and contraty to what people say it does come off even the factory originals come off seen both so I wont be told different and Dangers ones do the same they tend to lift and seperate. These are on dirt bikes and to be honest it has to be good in the first place but its the nature of the beast by using the bikes the decals are going to get destroyed especially in racing. I’ve had plastics come back with holes in them and nothing obviously is going to stand up to that.
They recommend supreme for boats never used it you pay your money and take your choice.
You only get it in white and black (well as far as I know) and I used to use a PC600 for printing on it You get lines don’t matter what anyone says you get lines I changed the feed calibration etc etc and you still get lines very noticable on some gradients less on clours but there all the same.
I now use the Cadet with Solvent ink Print Dry for 24 Hours then Lam and cut does an absolutely brilliant job of printing but the registration for cutting is not as accurate as the PC600 although it does a good job.
I have to experiment more with ink limit and bleed if I ever understand how to apply it.
Well rabbled on a bit but all the info you need I supposeHope this helps you
