is there a vinyl made of rubber?
Posted by Bill Dewison on 9 March 2004 at 21:36A chap came into the shop today wanting to know whether I could cut him some shapes for his motorbike. It turned out it was a dirt bike (or crosser I think) and the material he gave me as a sample was extremely thick (thicker than banner vinyl, and every vinyl I’ve come across) yet it still had similar carrier paper and was obviously cut by machine.
Question is, what is this stuff? And is it expensive? And presumably the thickness is because it takes a bit of knocking about, so would it be wise to vinyl numbers onto it? Oh and one last minor thing, is this stuff going to break my shiny plotter? 😕
Cheers, Dewi

HI DEWI.. NOT SURE IF ITS THE SAME STUFF MATE BUT IM SURE THERE WAS A TOPIC ON THAT TYPE OF VINYL A FEW WEEKS AGO. CANT REMEMBER WHOS ATRTED IT OR THE TOPIC TITLE. SORRY
oh and sorry for the caps 😳
with regards to plotter.. shouldnt be a problem mate. i think the graphtec plotters have able to cut card and the like.. dont see you having any probs.
try doing a couple of small tets cuts, this way you will be able to see the amount of pressure to set the knife to cut at. 😀 -
I’ve seen some of this type of stuff applied to bikes but not on the paper – I wouldn’t want to try and cut it on my plotter though, the stuff I’m talking about is really thick and tough. I guess it would be die cut or something, but maybe you got some intermediate grade ?
Did it have any name/make on the paper Dewi ?Nigel
-
It looked like brown grease-proof paper, but it was unmarked. There was a small logo on a peice of card in the bag, but it may have nothing to do with it. The logo had a half circle in black and a half circle above in white. 😕 Not much help I know, but it was definately thick stuff. Wouldn’t like to try and rip it with my teeth, lets put it that way! 😉

😆 😆 😆 forget my advice then mate.. im doing this completely blind. if its as bad as nigel says i would check first before cutting it. i have a thin soft rubber in mind here. not a wet suit 😉 😆 😆
-
hmmm…. don’t know what that would be then mate, probably some specialist producer I guess anyway. If you ever find out more let me know as I have been asked on occasion too.

quote Robert Lambie:i have a thin soft rubber in mind here. not a wet suit 😉
Ooeerr Robert 😮 😮 😉
I wouldn’t describe it as wet suit material, but it is the same thickness I’d say. Also it has a hardish top to it, kind of like a piece of 3mm foamboard, but more flexible and rubbery (that make any sense?).
One thing for sure, if they made wet suits out of this material, it’d be a bumpy ride getting it on, let alone swimming in it! Useful in shark terriotory tho 😉

Either way Dew it doesn’t sound like something you could cut with a regular plotter. If it’s a hard wearing material he’s looking for you could use a stoneguard material. I don’t know much about it but KPMF do one in black or clear. Alternatively you could make a regular graphic and have it resin domed(?) All sounds a bit expensive though, I s’pose.
-
Thanks for that Big G 😀 I’ll ring around for some samples in the morning. Is the stoneguard the one used by stonemasons when they’re doing headstones and the like?
Black is his prefered colour, with some white numbers on it, so that could be the stuff to use. As long as it lasts a few kicks of his boots and the odd tumble on the track, I suspect he’ll be happy. 😉

Hi Dewi,
I’ve been trying to sorce this stuf for years!
I’ve seen some decals being made by one of the big companies called Werx, they screen print the stickers then apply their own glue on a roller type thing. There is a company in Norfolk call Danger Uk who supply most of the Moto X world, I think they Edge their graphics, but still not sure about the vinyl.
Not much help I no, but you may be able to give them a call to produce your stickers and just add your mark up. They also have the many different templates for the bikes.
Have a look at the website, it will also give you an idea of the price they charge, Don’t do them too cheap!

No Dew, stoneguard is a really tough vinyl that is used on door pillars on certain cars, and is about 2-3 times the thickness of regular vinyl. Judging by the texture of it though, I wouldn’t try to apply vinyl on top of it. At least not the one I saw. It has a very heavy matt texture.
-
We were asked by a moto x company to produce decals like dangeruk,
they are edge printed then laminated with h68 500 mic clear and backed with pure acrylic adhesive (both available from Europoint) he prints the shape and hand cuts them , we looked at samples and you can see slight differences between cuts, i decided for the amount of colours he uses and time involved it wasn’t worth using our edge for this type of work… -
Thanks guys 😀
Johnny, checked out the website, I’ve seen that kit somewhere before 😕
The laminating method would be a good way of building up to the thickness required, I’ll have to see how far this guys budget goes 😀

Adrian,
I contacted Europoint London and they say they don’t stock anything like this. Do you have any more info and what branch did you speak with, i’d like to get hold of some, I have loads of Moto X customers. Me included!Cheers
Johnny
P.S Do you have any samples?
-
Bristol branch sent me the samples 0117 938 1000
and it is what Dangeruk use -
Cheers Adrian,
Called them, the’re sending samples. They only sell 50m rolls though! Anyone want to go halfs/quarters whatever with me if I order some?Johnny

Hi Guys
if you go to this site http://www.graphicms.com/product_sheets … convex.htm the vinyl they use is thick and for bikes and rough use.
Terry -
Nice one Terry, I have emailed them to see if there is anywhere in the UK I can get this from.
Cheers

Can you let me know what they reply with Johnny? If it’s not available, I’ll go 50/50 with you on a roll of the other. Do you do any of WerxMX stuff btw? I’ve tried scanning the brown paper my customer left, but it isn’t going too well atm 😕
Cheers, Dewi

No Dewi I hav’nt got any Werx stuff in, but I know the owner of an MX shop so I can maybe lend some stickers for templares. What bike / year do you need?
Johhny
-
Its a Suzuki bike, but haven’t got a clue on the year. I tried calling the chap today, but his mobile was off 😕 I’ll try and catch him tomorrow and grab the year off him.
Thanks for that Johnny, much appreciated 😀

I’ve now got 2 weeks to do 3 of them, should be fun, its only took me two months to find out the make and year of the bike! Reckon I should be finished in, ooooh, December 😉 😉
Still want to go 50/50 on a roll Johnny? 😀

dewi+ jonny( sounds like a new game show!!!)
The stuff at http://www.graphicsms.com.. as per a previous posting, i passed the details of this company to Jane at Vinyl Logistics in Newark, last i heard(couple of weeks ago now!!)she was e-mailing the guy, Doug ****** !
I would suggest you speak to Jane and get an angle on whats happening,.
Graphicsms.com do some super looking equipment and accessories.
One of their other products was at Sign2004,i picked up a sample from the Spandex stand(i think?)Tony Winterbottom had brought it into the country for comments. The sample was a strip 8″ long and had miniature motocross number plate shapes kiss cut from a product that graphicsms call “Convex”.
regards
Darrylp.s i still have a couple of the strips if you want to see one

Blimey Johnny! 😮 Sun, sea, sand and you’re checking on signs!! 😉
Convex stuff sounds good, would that work with the PC60? I forgot to ring Europoint about the 500 clear, but I’ll ring them on Monday 😀 Still haven’t finished the designs yet, not good 😕
Enjoy your holiday though mate, bring us back a stick of rock 😉 😉

I was just about to say, ‘I’ll ring em on Tuesday’ 😆 Don’t think I’ll have the time though, I’ll be too busy trying to get all those crease marks I’ve made on a porsche 😉 😉 😉
Thank you for that though Nigel. I’m hoping this will be the first of many once I’ve got the hang of it, but I’ve got to admit, this one was not nice to fit 😕 Ahh well, its done, thats the main thing 😀
Edit: True Nobby 😀 Doubt the rider will be too chuffed tho 🙄 He’s a cool bloke though, I’m helping to fit more to his bike soon, so it should be fun 😀
