is there a low tack clear application tape available?
Posted by RickJesse on 2 October 2007 at 10:56Hi I’ve recently starting selling stickers for DIY installation but a few comments I’ve had back is that the application tape has pulled off paint. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a suitable low tack CLEAR application tape.
I currently use Hexis for most of my supplies and I use their HEX166 which is a medium tack.
Any ideas welcome.
Cheers, Rick

hi Nicola, I did ring Hexis, but they don’t have a CLEAR low tack application tape which is why I’m posting, as someone is bound to know another supplier…..I hope.

Avery sell clear embossed app tape….we get ours from Cox Plastics

Rick, I don’t think this is your problem, the paint pulling off if it is a vehicle, is purely down to poorly applied paint. Your customers should go back to the person who applied the paint and complain!
I’ve come across this when vehicles have had a cheap blow over and medium or even low tack pulls up the paint.

Thank Glenn will check that one out.
Neil, its actually on internal painted walls. I noticed myself on two occasions when applying to a freshly plastered and painted wall. I think its down to the fact that the paint dries too quick on the fresh plaster and doesn’t hold on the plaster.

I tried Cox Plastics/Robert Horne but they only had medium tack clear.
Any other ideas?

I don’t think anyone supplies a low tack clear tape but if they did I think you would still get the same problem.
I don’t think the problem is with the application tape as much as the surface you are trying to apply it to. Emulsion type paints are quite easy to mark or remove, Ive even known blue tac to take paint off when it hasn’t been applied very well.
Your only real way round this is to let people know that there is a chance that the application tape will remove some of the paint. -
you are right, i was just thinking if there was a low tack tape that would minimize the problem.
Think I’ll order some low tack paper and try that see if it works.

Ask some of the suppliers for a sample of low tack paper tape so you can try yourself, trouble is you are going to have to try it on a few different surfaces and also old and freshly painted stuff.
The other problem with using a low tack tape is that if you have graphics with small parts then it is more difficult for these to stick to the wall so people may complain that the vinyl won’t stick to the wall. -
I usesd extremely low tack clear before not sure who supplied it, I would think dorotape.

I managed to find some, I believe its an Ocaral product.
Ordered it from the Vinyl Corporation……not cheap though.

Rick, does it really need to be clear? A paper application tape will be cheaper and in most cases probably just as good.
