is oracle 851 better than 751 for recesses?
Posted by Hugh Potter on 15 November 2007 at 22:06i’m doing several trucks / vans for a guy soon, one of the trucks has a bigger side panel, which means that i’ll be going over some recesses, probably around 20mm deep, is oracle 851 alot better than 751 ?
i need to stick with oracle for colour consistency.
thanks.

If I remember correctly Its just 10 microns thinner
and 10/8/6 year BW/Colour/metallic respectively instead isn’t it?
Itll rip easier and if it touches itself on the adhesive side its game over lol, I can vouch for that.
That said its oracals flagship cast so performs like it.
very deep recesses and enormous rivets might warrant it but 751 should do just fine Id imagine for a 20mm recess, Ive seen people do those with 651, (which was rather a bad move)
He now has a 4 foot jagged line of ripped vinyl that is 7 months old down the side of his van -
do you mean you are bridging the gap/recess and stretching the vinyl into it. or folding in and out the recess hugh?
-
HI Rob,
i have to go across two recesses at right angles to each other, so i guess i need to stretch it in there as laying it in will cause problems.
thanks. -
i am guessing this is a solid colour rather than digital print?
what make of vehicle is it? -
Hugh I have never used 851, but 751 is not upto being stretched to much,
apart from anything it does lose its colour, you say 20mm deep but what is the width of the recess?, it does make a difference, if the recess is only 50mm across, or is just a recess to a panel in one step.Peter

it’s a lorry, forget what make now, think it’s a 16t ERF recovery truck.
the panel may not be as deep as 20mm, was just guessing,
yes, solid colour,
i guess i could just use 6 or 751, go straight over the recess, trim it and add in a section of vinyl. it might be tricky to match though as it’s a map of britain outline !

In that case I would go with Oracal 951
It hasnt been invented yet but I have been to the pub for 3 hours

Hugh, 851 should do what you need to do fine, I wouldn’t do it in 751. I like 851, but the gold/silver gets a bit brittle if its stretched too much. Try and work it into the recess before you heat it.
The first recess will be the difficult one, but after you’ve done that, it gets easier. 😉

thanks Shane / All !
i’ve done a good number of recesses before, but they’ve usually been quite shallow or i’ve just been able to put the vinyl in them, theseare just a bit more tricky as he top of the design goes over the corner of the recess !
