Is it possible to print on to laminate film??
Posted by Stuart Green on 17 December 2009 at 23:22Is it possible to print on to laminate film?? this might be a stupid question to some but the reason i would want to do this is I sometimes get unprintable films which i would like to print on to. problem is you cant as its not suitable for the printer. What i tried was printing and applying a clear vinyl on top of the film say for example on to reflective. the problem i have with this is you sometimes get glue marks which you can see whether its dry or wet applied. I thought what if you print on to laminate and apply laminate instead. would this work??
cheerio!! 😀

Clear vinyl or laminate would give the same results if you are getting glue showing.

I mean glue showing from the clear vinyl martin. I was expecting laminate due to its nature of giving a good finish to be a better result??

I’m not sure why you get glue marks Stuart.
We print onto reflective for rear safety markings, then laminate it, with no problem.
We have also printed onto laminate in the past, again with no adverse effects.

Thats exactly what i needed to know john. I cant print on to reflective so i need a form of clear vinyl on top. if laminate can be printed on then i cant see there being any problems. I had problems with the metamark clear vinyl which i used to print on which showed the glue from the back of it when applied on to the reflective. I haven’t actually used laminate as of yet hence the question. if laminate can be printed on and as you have done this before then i guess that would be the best thing to do!!

john prints straight on to the reflective then over-laminates for protection.
not all laminates print well with some eco solvents but a lot of the matched films do.
ask for some samples of clear printable vinyl.
glue marks are normally down to application.
remember that by the time you have printed on to clear, and applied to the base vinyl, then over-laminate for protection thats 3 layerschris

I think i’m confusing my question here so to simplify I want a printable clear vinyl to go on to an unprintable vinyl such as mirror, chrome, reflective, and so on which isn’t directly printable, without leaving any residue marks. 🙄

ok put another way.
i use image perfect 5700 transparent to print to. then applied to chrome etc. then over-laminated for protection.
some times we apply the clear to the chrome before printing as we get a more accurate cut after laminating.chris

Speak to suppliers.
Certainly you can get printable reflective. Metamark do one, and Avery have one on the way.
http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … highlight=You may well find that there’s printable version of the other stuff you want too.
As for "glue marks" I’m not quite sure what you mean, but can only go with Chris, in that it is down to the application. Certainly we don’t get anything like that.

We print on Grafityp S20P clear gloss then overlaminate, we’ve fitted loads of this to glass (so the glue side of the vinyl is facing the viewer) never had a single blemish or glue mark. We fitted with RapidTacII but I dont think this would make too much difference.

I’m guessing these glue marks are just silvering which disappear in time any.
Maybe do some and then leave a while and watch the results.
Apologies if I am stating the obvious and it isn’t silvering though 🙄

I would have thought it was silvering as well. We have laminated wet and the silvering does go after a while. If you use the method as you describe, as Chris says thats three layers you end up with if you finally laminate for protection.

Grafitype do a printable reflective, some other suppliers also have printable films.
I’ve also printed onto clear vinyl and then applied to films etc, the marks you are seeing are most likely silvering as stated previously.

silvering is hard to explain, but it is for lack of better words, a blemish in the adhesive layer after laminating, as if not all the area has made contact. It does disappear in a day or two, or even less, it is more noticeable when using a cold laminator
