I’m looking for a company to do a prototype injection moulded piece of plastic for me, if it works out ok (which I know it will we will need to start with a few small runs and then increase with time)

Can anyone recommend a company who would be prepared to help out in the initial stages?

Sorry can’t say what the product is at the moment as patent is pending

    cheers

Don’t know about injection moulding but I have worked a lot with GRP (Fibreglass) is the past. If it’s fairly low volume have you considered making your product from GRP which you can easily mould yourself without any specialist equipment?

Phil, you got my attention with that one, can I get a smooth finish enough to put some md7 on to a cylindrical shape?

Pm me if you can with some details? At least I could get a prototype together. I need to get about 100 together to start with just small items basic shape.

    cheers

vac form could work its a small cylindrical shape about the size of 2 toilet roll tubes stuck together length wise……

    Were on a tight budget

two toilet rolls stuck together…. think someone beat u to it

last time I spoke with injection molder…. costly setup process

I don’t want to scare you but as it was mentioned the setup cost is …….!!!!

I can’t give you details but somebody who I know very well just did it. The plastic is about 300mm by 1200mm and made tool for that (3000kg !!!) cost him nearly 75k

    🙂

yep, thanks for that so looks like phils suggestion is looking more attractive but vac forming will need looking at too, that’s a possibility

what about someone with one of those 3D Printers that Graphtec GB used to sell… they for making 3D plastic prototypes. im probably describing it completely wrong but that’s actually what it did.
had a look on their site but not on there anymore…

It’s called rapid prototyping (they use this at Dundee university where my daughter is doing Jewelry design). The object is literally "printed" in layers. It takes a long time to produce but a unique 3d object can be made relatively cheaply in comparison to traditional methods of tool making

yeh found something similar here phill…

    $this->auto_embed_video(‘http://www.youtube.com/v/r7Io_Y-KsOE?version=3&hl=en_US’, ‘560’, ‘340’)

i watched a program about 5 years ago. they said that within 10 years 3d printers will replace paper printers. or 3d printers that will combine 3d and paper printing…
their vision was that instead of buying a toy on amazon, you bought and paid it there and then by card. it then sent a file to your printer that would then print/create the toy on your desktop. much cheaper for the seller as its only a file you download, but expired after a certain amount of time. if that makes sense.. i could see how it could work…

glad u liked the kitchen roll hehe, it made me lmao a bit

with regards printers…. there is a hobby-looking one but it really is snail powered and its built in usa.. it is not any good production… i looked into prototyping before 😉

    Mo,

i am a 3d designer and have a lot of experience in injection moulding and vacuum forming, if you want to discuss your project, dont mind any NDA to make you feel more comfortable on the patent thing.

currently i am working on 100,000 drinks glasses for diaego, that started with 1 off !

:police: Please take a moment to look over our Board Rules.

Hey john, now all you need to do is think of a plastic sleeve to cover one, fully printed with cast in a variety of different designs….. et voilla’ disposable personalised lady toy covers…… Oh damn there goes my patent!

I bet if I put one on eBay someone would copy it, do it in cheap one colour vinyl, and sell it 95% cheaper on the second day it was up!

(you could even put pictures of soldiers wives husbands on it for use while they are away from home)…… now there’s a seller!

man I love this forum, thanks I will stay in touch, that looks like the way I should be going for now anyway, money is tight so it would probably suit my budget

Hi Mo, I used to have a factory do injection moulding for me but that business of mine has finished, as a result I do have 2 x .75 ton tools (moulds) which you could have the inside changed for you product.
    could save you a fortune.
If you want more information pm me

    Cheers
    Lee

Thanks Lee, but now looks like we have sourced a potential ready made (part made anyway) product that suits us for one style, and due to the thickness of the product (quite thin so probably grp is out too) we are now looking at form able plastic and polycarbonate heat forming… Were going to set up a small Vac Forming box in the workshop (one of the units adjacent to us has an old one they don’t use anymore) and have a look to see if we can do that too…

Thanks everyone for your input, it’s really helped me to find the right direction for the product. When I have sold the first one to secure the design rights I will let you all know what it is… We would be the only manufacturers & distributors (until we franchise) of this product in the world….. what a nice place to be in! (for a change)

when you review materials for forming, have a good look at PETG products

Thanks dave, thats all we are short of at the moment, the sheets for forming, this machine works really well, only have 3 sheets here tho, and I have no idea what to buy lol..

Rock and roll just had a look that’s exactly what we need, really appreciate that mate saved me a lot of googling!

So now if anyone needs low run vacuum forming…lol I’m your man! Don’t think I could handle another production arm on my business I’m going mad thanks again

Hi Nick, were in the process of making one too…… there are plenty of videos on youtube for them, especially if you just want to try something out, although probably not safety sanctioned….lol
