Wow, pretty impressed with this machine, many thanks to Peter for the power cord advice. Must admit I was quite anxious about substituting the power leads.
I initially had a demo at spandex of the FX, but unfortunately this was way out of my price range with all the other additions e.g software and gerber plotter/cutter, however I was lucky enough to be offered a reconditioned Edge 1 with all the kit, although I must say that I am still waiting to be impressed by the Omega software.
My plan is to continue designing and laying out my work in Freehand and importing it in to the software for cutting (although haven’t got this far yet). Looking forward to some major Photoshop work though.
How do you guys get on with Omega?

Jason, I couldnt get on with omega, I switched to signlab as soon as they supported the edge, just my thing though, some people find omega the way to go. I dont get on with photoshop either, prefer coral. matter of preference.

What type of work do you intend to put the edge to?

Hi Peter, a bit of everything really, I bought it mainly to supplement some vehicle work I’ve been doing, I did look at the versacamm but the need to print metalics and white gave the Edge ‘the edge’, even if it is an older machine.
I’m keen to move in to more specialised photoshop work as well, I’ve been using this package almost constantly since 94 and I’m looking forward to trying out a few things as soon as time permits.

Jason the Edge can give some very good results, and if you are creative, and combine the spot capabilities with cymk some really good stuff can be produced, on a small scale that is, nowadays, its really not a competetive way to print to vinyl, so think as the say, outside of the circle.

the edge can still do stuff that inkjets cant,

Do you have a link Andrew?
I am not really liking Omega anymore now that I have my VersaCAMM and can use Illustrator/VersaWorks to design/rip. I would love to only have to use Illustrator for the edge.

Another query (hopefully I’ll have some answers one day). I am finally ready to cut using my plotter, however I do not have a serial port fitted to my laptop. I have bought a USB to serial converter, but the machine does not seem to be picking up the plotter. Any suggestions.
    Thanks

What type of serial to USB converter did you buy…. was it Belkin?

Not sure, its a sort of turqoisey colour, bought it off ebay, I have the dongle plugged in to the other one. The GQMgr seem to be defaukting to the edge though.

    Thanks

Done, I’m so glad I use a Mac, too many COM ports and device managers to worry about with a PC, now its up and running I’m going to leave well alone and port all of my work across.
Andrew I was told that the the Mac software was no longer available and would not support sequential numbering, I’ll follow the links now though.
    Cheers

Hi, I have only ever used Gerber software (Advantage & now Omega), found it to be straight forward to use, but granted there are a few annoying features.
Our edge is now only used for a couple of customers who have stuff that cant be done on our wide format printer. It is still a very good machine though.

Photoshop now that is hard to fathom out, might be better when I’ve had the training day!!

    JAson,
I have been looking at an edge 1 from spandex.
What kit did you get with yours please?

More importantly, what extra kit can one ask for 😀

    Jason,

I’ve been using the Edge, with Omega since they were released, I also use Corel and Illustrator for vector work.
You have to be a bit careful which you use, depending on what type of device you’re sending the output to etc.

Omega is such an easy vector package to use, I rate it highly, and now with the most recent update, it’s pretty powerful. I can zip through a job in Omega and even export it to another vector package and be quicker than using certain other programs.

Illustrator is a great piece of software, more powerful but more generalised too, some of the methods don’t seem to make sense after you’ve used something as specific as Omega, but i do like the program.

Hi Andrew, I had a refurbished Edge 1 a GSX plus plotter (New) and the omega software, you don’t get anything for free, and they charge you for everything, I even had a petrol charge on one invoice (only a £1.00 mind, but its not the point). Having said that you do get what you pay for, the kit is top notch as many people have already said.
I stand corrected, I am just looking at my foils and it did ship with one free foil and 10m of vinyl, which is good to play with, I didn’t want to waste the foils I’d bought from PrintOne so thats a positive for Spandex.

If you would like any more info Andrew just let me know.

    Regards
    Jason
