  • im after a supplier of acrylic please?

A case of the title being a whole lot more interesting than the content 🙄

All I’m after is an acrylic supplier, 3mm & 5mm, that charges for the material I buy, not by some massive sheet that I’ll never use. 😕 I’ve been asked to quote repeatedly on shop signs where I would need acrylic and I’ve been quoted between £200 – £300 just for the acrylic, let alone adding vinyl or a lightbox to the equation. Maybe there isn’t a supplier that does this, but its blasted annoying! 👿

I don’t mind carrying stock, I carry almost 250 metres of vinyl, alot of foamboard and a certain amount of reynobond/dinbond, but adding acrylic to the stock list isn’t high on my agenda. Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers, Dewi

All I can say Dew, is that I use Amari. Mainly because they carry a lot of different sheet sizes and cut to size for free. They will always advise you on the most cost effective sheet size available, in my experience. You’ll have to do a search for your local branch. We do have a local plastics supplier who will sell part sheets, but they are a rip off.

Incidently, as you mentioned lightboxes; I get these from Kestrel. I am yet to see their prices beaten, and their prices for including the acrylic panels are a bargain.

I can only give suggestion for a couple of suppliers here in the North East but I am sure they will send it by courier to you.

http://www.bayplastics.co.uk/ this is an excellent site for data sheets and I would recommend them for the technical knowledge – not as cheap as some but will cut to size

pyramid display 0191 487 7130 – their prices are very competitive and will cut to size

the reason for bing charged a premium over full sheet prices is the fact that cutting a big sheet to size means actually cutting it more than once just for your sheet , generally in 1/2 and then 1/2 that depending on your size and how the cut can be made. The balance of the sheet sits in stock for yonks and gets scratched and damaged.
Most acrylic suppliers will give you the same price on full or 1/2 sheets. A table saw can be used to cut your 1/2 sheet to size and is an invaluable tool for a signmaker and soon pays for itself.
Acrylic is one of the materials we use in vast quantities as a signmaker , it has some wonderful properties over and above anything else despite its price.
There are 2 types of acrylic , cast (expensive) and Extruded. Extruded is fine for most applications unless you are substantially working and glueing it and is a lot cheaper than cast.(but often doesnt come in the colour range of cast)
To give an indication of pricing here , cast 3mm acrylic is about 15-18 quid a square meter in full or 1/2 sheets. (South Africa)
