  • Huge Fire breaks out at TEL Signs in Manchester – Video

Posted by .News on 3 March 2012 at 21:01

A HUGE fire has taken place at Tel Signs – the illuminated neon sign outlet – on Chester Road, Hulme this morning.

Just after 8.30am emergency services were called to the former Bulls Head Hotel following reports of a large fire. The fire service are currently at the scene and are tackling the blaze.

The owners of the business are also at the scene and it’s believed no one was inside the building when the explosion took place.

There’s a video below taken by Jonathan Schofield who was on the scene.

A member of staff from Tel Signs bought a paper from Tasties sandwich shop next door before going to open up the neon sign outlet early this morning. The shopkeeper told us he witnessed her quickly rushing out of the building after realising there was a fire.

The fire brigade appear to have the blaze under control despite initial concerns that it could spread to adjacent buildings. Mini explosions have occured since the initial blast. Our pictures show firefighters breaking into the spa next door to try and prevent any spread.

Traffic officers have now closed Chester Road, between Bridgewater Way and Mancunian Way, while emergency services deal with the scene. Motorists in Manchester are advised to find alternative routes after road closures were put in place while the fire brigade deal with the incident.

    David comments…

"Tel Signs are located right around the corner from my office.

This morning they’ve suffered a damaging fire at their premises, causing road closures into the centre of Manchester.

Not only a few weeks I was talking with a member of their staff, who was discussing how the fast development of LED technology, is having a dramatic affect on their business.

They’ve been trading for as long as I can remember… I’m assuming it highly unlikely that they’d reopen.

Sad circumstances, and a few talented staff facing a bleak future."

Sounds like they had to demolish the building after the fire for safety reasons.

    I’ve not heard anything yet.

After the conversation I had with one of their staff before X-Mas they were finding it hard to compete with the LED Market, and especially as they can be produced in house by most sign shops, and with minimal cost.

Personally I don’t think they’ll reopen, but will keep my ears open for any news.

    Sad news.

Their signage isn’t what I would expect from such a company though 😮

    cheers David…

I thought same on the signage Daniel, big building on a main road. bit of a missed advertising opportunity there! especially if business is slow…
that said, they may be strictly trade only and not looking for the passing trade, but still… 😕

Think their main business was trade, but accepted any work.

The did have some neon in the corner window, but was one of them places you’d drive past and not give a second thought about.

    Hope they are insured,
someone I know down here in Folkestone just had their business go up in flames…not insured and looking at losing their farm because of it.

Being a cynical sort of person I would imagine they had more than ample insurance cover Cheryl.

Still very sad for the people that worked there though who will now be out of a job with little or no financial payment.

If I’m honest I do have little sympathy for people in that situation. A terrible thing to say I know, but realistically only have themselves to blame if they have avoided paying a small sum a month because ‘it will never happen to me’.
