Just curious how you all arround here would go with a job like this.
I will probably have to do three different vans (2 vw’s and one vito).

As I keep messing up a lot of material each time because I start wrong I keep asking 🙂

    1. would you plot the lightcolour stroke yourself or would you order the vinyl cut in rolls of the exact width?
    2. would you use application tape?
    3. would you use applicationtape on the large dark band on the bottom, the parts arround the wheel of this van are sticking out more then the rest of the car (see photo)

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards,
    JJ

I would apply these wet without application tape and using a cloth covered applicator or felt applicator to avoid scratching. The lighter coloured band I would cut myself on the a plotter and again apply wet without tape.

Just my way of doing it 😀

    Dry with tape.

I’d do the dark colour in panels and apply dry with tape using the hinge method.

I’d do the lighter shade in two panels using the hinge method and dry too.

I’d be using a cast too, as it will conform the best over the complex curves on the wheel archs

you could try the oracal 870 with the new command spray to do the dark shade, but I’d do the lighter shade dry still.

    just my 2c

as much as those wheel arches would give me reason to worry, i’d do the same as shane,

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!

    One other question:

Would you let the light overlap the dark or the dark overlap the light?

The reason I ask is I have a reason for both options.

Light over dark makes has a bottom edge, so water and snow will not stay on the edge. But the problem with this option is that the light will be a bit darker on the overlap (showthrough, it will finally be orange and black).

When I overlap the dark over the light there are people saying snow might cause problems.

What is your opinion and how big do you make the overlappes on jobs like this?

    Thanks again

I always apply the top over the bottom. Does not allow anything to sit on the edge. Years ago this could contribute to a failure, not so much now with modern vinyls. Old habits die hard tho.

I’d do a 2-5mm overlap. A slight shade will not be noticed, unless the overlap is not consistant. Then it will sit up and wave 🙄

just take 2 rolls of vinyl about as wide as (from the bottom of the car to the top of the light blue. i guess about 60 or 70 cm.

applie the light blue to the car and the darker blue over the light, that way you have no white and it looks as one.
