  • how to use a router help and advice

Posted by John McCrorie on 13 March 2010 at 18:55

I have just purchased a cheap router and router table, I’m hoping to make small wooden sign blanks and plaques etc. I have never used a router before so I’m looking for some help and advice & tips on using it. I’m hoping to use it to make sign blanks, engrave letters & templates etc, any books or courses you would recommend.
    Thanks for any advice

well not sure how we can help you…
each router is a little bit different to the other….

if cutting metals, make sure you have mist of coolant !! 1 tip for you.

As mentioned above if you’re cutting metals use a coolant if your machine doesn’t have coolant unit then the every useful trigger spray will do the job.

If you’re cutting wood make its well seasoned, Oak especially can be a nightmare in terms of splintering if its remotely green

you’ll need to experiment a little with feed rates and spindle speed to find the best combinations for your machine on different substrates.

Stainless steel especially requires slow feed rates and multiple passes if you’re going to achieve crisp engraved text deep enough to paint fill
