  • How to price per letter

Posted by Alistair Richards on 28 March 2007 at 17:32

    Hi,

I usually work my prices out according to a particular design and per sq metre and this works well, and gives me time to think about things.

But more and more lately, i’m feeling the need to work stuff out by the letter. E.g. i’m getting people who want just a single word, 1 colour at a certain height and ask me for a price over the phone.

Can anyone tell me how to start about making myself a price list, and any rough examples please

    Cheers

I price per metre plus labour too…………… sort of unless it works out too cheap on my reckoning then I add a bit more 😀 But I have a minimum charge of £30, so if someone asks for one word that takes me 2 minutes to do, £30 it is.

I’ll go against the grain, if it’s that wee a job take a few quid for coffee and your customer will come back when they want the big stuff done!

Otherwise charge it out, I charge for half an hour and ignore the material if it’s not much, if the job take 5mins then your still winning.

Have to agree with Marcella on this we also have a minimum charge one word or letter !!! sometimes people who only want one word can use as much of your time, as someone who wants a van doing 🙄

But if it’s a plumber who fixes a leaky tap and charges you £30 …… you wouldn’t bat an eye!!!!!!

Your right! We recently got charged a lot more than that for some tap issues!!

But I’m a bit of a softy, the other thing as well is that it gives you a good name. It’s good to help people out and they remember it when there friend needs work done.

What I was saying only really applies if it’s a word or 2, no layout required and no rummaging through fonts

    Cheers Phill!

theres actually 2 to be done, a smaller one as well that we already had booked in for next week already… a signmakers work is never done!

done a bus yesterday (different company) and had a double decker outside for the last few days getting worked on when we got a chance. I think I’ll try and put pics of that on here tomorrow – quite a quirky job!

Lynn, as long as all the friends don’t turn up wanting one word jobs, I can only get through so much coffee and biscuits! (would maybe have to re-think the plan!!)

Yes it would be nice to see you post the finished results Gavin.

In answer to Alistairs original question – I generally price simple lettering at 1p per mm letter height. (e.g a 50mm letter height would be 50p a letter) – if there’s a lot of lettering involved I will go as low as 1/2p per mm letter height.

phills seems a pretty good way of doing it…
    we price per letter too…
    e.g.
letters upto 1.5" 40p each letter
    4" = £1.20

    etc etc

minimum charge on any job… £10

I used to price per letter, and still do for pure text, but found that van quotes took too long to do that way. For those I now use the square metre plus labour method.

Popped a pic of that bus in the portfolio pages – you don’t do a bus for ages and then 3 come at once! (or 4 in our case!)

Phill I’ll mail you a pic when the job is done, it already looks completely different and I doubt we are near to having a final layout yet!
