  • How to make small flat cut letters?

Any ideas who could produce PARIS in 5mm flat cut foam pvc letters just 20mm high?
I was thinking maybe of cutting round a vinyl template with a fret saw but I’m sure they will have a homemade look about them.

20mm letters are a bit on the small side Peter, struggle to get locators on the back of those. :lol1: :lol1:

First thought would be a laser. I don’t know what job it would make of foam, but would make a nice job on Perspex.

A while ago, I made a really nice small sign with those 3d dimensional fridge magnet letters that you get in multicolour packs for children learning to read. The letters are actually perfectly made. I just sprayed them all the same coulour and you would never know what they originally were.
I know you are looking for flat cuts but there might be something on that auction site that could be adapted to suit, necklaces with names, charms, etc….just a thought.

I believe foam on a laser gives off poisonous fumes?

Hi Peter Perspex or acrylic is the way to go and I would reckon a laser is the only way to get good results, John is right you cannot cut foam with a laser as it gives off toxic chlorine gas, for fixing to board or what ever you can use contact adhesive of double sided tape, if you want send us the artwork just to check the font and I will get my laser operator to cut them for you free

    Thanks for all the input.
Haven’t got the job yet but needed to know if it could be done and how.
    Very helpful.

1mm router bit. Leave tabs. Island fill route the inside of the letters right out. Break tabs and sand where the tabs where. I’ve done 50mm high but never tried 20mm yet.

I can also cut foam with a UCT blade on my Zund. Cut in reverse so the overcut is in the back of the letter. Food for thought,
