  • How to make a file "Read only"?

Posted by Earl Smith on 13 December 2008 at 08:58

I have recorded all my Embroidery clip-art files onto my external hard drive. In my embroidery program I have to open these in a separate window within the program.
The problem is that when working with this opened file I will maybe change colours, write a name or delete parts of it to suit the customer. Then when I press save ( I should press "save as") the file is over written and no longer the original clipart on my hard disk.
How can I make just this one folder within my hard drive a read only folder? I am using Widows XP.

    Earl,
If you just create a folder called ‘edited clip art’ or something on the external drive or the Pc drive. When you open the file ‘football’ and modify it, save it as ‘footballA’ or ‘football 1312008’ (todays date) in the new folder, that will then not affect the original.
If I do stuff like that I always open the file and do a save as and change the name and location straight away then as I work on the file and make saves I know I am safe.
You can alter the characteristics of the file type in XP to read only but I think that will be a ‘Global’ setting which means that all files of that type will be affected
There are lots of ways of safeguarding originals – try thinking about it in terms of bits of paper copy and a photocopier – copy the original and put it away then just play about with the copies.

    Good morning Earl

This is the way to do it:

    1. Open the folder containing all the files

    2. Hold the Ctrl + A key down. This selects All the files

    3. Right click on one of the highlighted files and choose Properties from the flyout menu list.

    4. In the Properties window at the bottom you’ll see a small check box labelled read only – ensure there’s a tick in that box.

    That’s it, done.

    Cheers

    John

    Just edited to correct!!!

Thanks Steve and John. All the original info is on the CD which came with the program so I haven’t lost the info. I have copied it onto the hard drive so access is much quicker in my shop when a customer is there. Normally I do an instant save to a file in the customers name but sometimes with the pressure of the shop I just hit save without the customer file being created.
I have done what you said John and now all is protected. When I hit save the file is saved next to the original clip art.
    Thanks again.

Sorry Earl, I gave the opposite instructions for what you needed!

Whatever you do, make sure you have a backup.

i would expect all artwork to be saved in several folders that if I want to re-order I can do so quickly without re-editing the file.

All artwork etc is backed up daily. What I dont want to do is over write my clipart files. That now, thanks to you is sorted.
The embroidery program opens a seperate window direct from the clipart, not an import as in Corel. So the root file is , or now was , over writable.
    Thanks again
    Earl.
