How to install 3D metal letters without drilling?
Posted by George Neagu on 22 February 2016 at 18:04Hello,
I have to install 3D metal letters on a wooden posh panel. These letters are meant to be attached with some fixings but the client does not want any holes into the wooden panel.
I was thinking to use double-sided tape but the back of the letters are not flat, the edge of the letter is 1-2mm higher than the back panel, see the image attached.
Another idea would be to use some glue (eg. NO NAILS glue) but this won’t be easy. Has anyone done this before? Any ideas?
thank you,

Hi Iain,

If these quite heavy looking letters are mounted anywhere above people, make sure your customer to signs a disclaimer taking full responsibility if they drop.
Personally I would drill these into the wood for safety’s sake.Simon

pack out with foamex leaving top of letters clear and fit vhb tape. Drill hole in top of the rear of the letters with a slot upwards then you can put a screw into the facsia, place the letter on and pull down slightly into the slot you made then stick the vhb tape. Belt and braces mate. 😀

The letters should have had flush bridges at the back so you can fit some really strong VHB tape, having them sat down like this causes problems. Are you not able to ask the manufacturer of the letters to sit the bridges flush?

Yes, I agree with that but this is what happens when sales get involved in production.
There is no way to reposition those bridges, they are well welded, unless we produce them again.
I will have to glue them with NO NAILS or something similar.Thank you all for reply.

They look soldered to me, it is possible to remove them if that’s the case, you just run a hot soldering iron over them. Fitting with no nails is not something I can say will or wont work, doubt it will be easy tho….put plenty on

Hi
don’t use no nails it dries hard & will fail, use a construction adhesive like Bostik Simson stays flexible and produces a strong bond ensure you use the primer to clean both surfaces however this will make the letters un-removable or you will end up with a damaged board which will be the same for most of the bonding solutions. If Providing the letter is supported you can put big blobs on to fill that recess.bostik-us.com
think it was the 70-12 I used with a primer.

Hi,
I have installed these letters today.
I used some constrction adhesive but the letters were sliding down under their weight so I had to put 2-3 blobs of No Nails as well for instant hold.
It went pretty good considering the back of the letters was wonky. Let’s see how long they will stay up.Cheers
