  • How to drill holes in plexi

    Hi!
I’m wondering if anyone knows how to drill holes into a 8 mm thick plexi.
I’m not sure if plexi is what you call it in English, but the material is a processed plastic which in my case is transparent. I recall reading a thread about it for not so long ago on how to make the edges round, using a heat gun and a knife. But I just can’t remeber the name…

I put tape over it mark the hole and then drill straight through using normal drill bits.

I use normal drill bits (metal HSS).

With a light but constant force & quite high drill speed.

The MOST important time is when ‘breaking’ out of the back of the material.

You must have a scrap of the same or a hard material at the back and a bit of pressure to hold these together. The drill then cuts flawlessly from one sheet into the other without the usual ‘bite’ and chunks chipping off the acrylic.

Tape is a good idea for stopping the bit slipping on the face for the smaller pilot drill.

After that I would remove the tape as it can wrap around the bit and snarl up.

Also if it’s a large hole you may want to remove any protective coating as sometimes swarf from the cut gets trapped between the sheet and the protective film and can scratch.

Apart from those suggestions as per what’s already been said.

    Tim.
