How to draw a golf course map?
Posted by Ewan Chrystal on 25 August 2013 at 20:44I’ve been asked to make tee signs for the local golf club. They also want maps of each hole on the signs.
Is there software available specifically for this or how would i go about it?
I’m thinking along the lines of using google earth and illustratorEwan Chrystal replied 12 years ago 12 Members · 19 Replies -

hi ewan, would think that they should be able to supply you with drawings/maps of the course that you can copy, they must have them from when it was designed.other wise your going to put alot of effort and time into this and its hard to see how you can factor that into the finished job/price. 🙂 🙂

Hi John, unfortunately there are no drawings/designs of the course. I am surprised there is not software available to do this kind of thing on existing courses

Either an OS map and scan/manual trace the course, or as you say, possibly Google maps or Google Earth screenshot and again, trace manually. I’d be tempted to put this to them as a separate job from which they would have the finished course artwork/vectors that they could then use for future alternative artwork.

This will be a piece of cake using Google earth a just tracing the elements but as said you will need to charge for this separately as it will be time consuming 18 holes if you spend half an hour per hole its still a days work

Usually the score card has a rudimentary map on it, which is all the golfers will need to see on the tee…………
-
All the current score card has is a single line showing the middle of the fairway so not much use even as a template
-
What about a stroke saver most courses have them, that would be easily scanned
Have you had a look at there website they sometimes have the holes on there too.

Nothing like that I’m afraid Graeme. Its just my wee local 9 hole course who are gradually dragging themselves into this century

Hmm that’s difficult one then.
Back to google earth i think, although i think that could be time consuming.
Good luck 😮

I’ve done quite a few site plans from google earth / maps, simple zoom down in satellite view and trace.
As others have said, Definitely do this as a seperate job and charged accordingly, Give them a price for it with an option to purchase the copyright too, for an additional fee of course!

Have done this too with Google Earth, I used the print screen function, saved all the pics and then in Corel I used the ‘place in a container’ function to get a series of overlapping photos. I then picked out the details I wanted and vectored them. I was mapping a race route, but the same proceedure would work with a golf course.

😀 Hi, I’m new here, literally like ten minutes… Your post was first to catch my interest and I chuckled when I read it!. I didn’t get through half the replies and just had to respond…..It’s actually not as complicated as it appears…….. 🙂 But that’s not why I chuckled….
One summer, many moons ago when I was about 17 or 18 a really creepy guy hired me to paint sandblasted signs on his porch for one of the golf courses nearby. (long before I even knew what a sign company was) THAT was all he did; sandblasted signs but for several courses on the east coast. He made a good deal of money off of them as well. But all they had for artwork was the Tee number and shape of the green for that hole!!! They were different sizes but mostly 1′ x 2′ single sided sandblasted Redwood, and only the green, a flag and number were painted; some had a water shape as well. (ugly colors too) I dreaded every day I had to go there!!…………anyway!! They are called "Tee" signs here and the artwork is quite simple;only one or two basic shapes around the immediate hole are usually included. Usually oval and maybe kidney for the water.
…….I had forgotten all about that job until today. I guess I’ve been doing signs much longer than I’d thought!
Not sure what your customer is looking for but perhaps they have brochure or a photo you could get an idea from. ….

welcome to the boards julie, great to have you here.
please make a post in the "say hello" forum and tell us about yourself, 😀

Here’s where i’m at so far. This was done using the print screen from google earth and then tracing the shapes in flexisign. I used flexi as opposed to illustrator purely as i’m more comfortable with it. I’m not entirely happy with it yet but it is a learning processs and i’m slowly getting there.

Don’t play golf but looks good to me.
I would want a big you are here sign -
Looks good to me too.
Not telling you how to suck the proverbial egg but have you looked at how others are presented. A bit of background and you’re there.

I was just going to post a similar thing Harry…….A background would help bring the whole thing together

Agree with you completely BUT this was as far as my designing knowledge would allow 🙂
It wont actually be laid out like this either. each hole will be on a separate board on each Tee so i dont really need to fill in the gaps on the image i posted. Would be great to add a bit more detail but i’m not quite at that stage yet
