    Hi all,
We’ve just been asked to quote for a sign which by our standards is HUGE.

The customer wants either aluminium or lighter (I suggested dibond)

    with the measurements being 39ft X 30inches.
the text to be a minimum of 24inch high and the full length of the sign.
If we use our present way of doing it it seems rather expensive. But then are we selling ourselves cheap.

I just wondered what others think so we don’t lose the job or don’t lose money on it.

    Many thanks

    Keith

    Hi Keith,

Depends on the details of the fitting – like is there a nice flat bit of clear wall where its going or have you to remove old sign etc ? Are you screwing the panels straight up or using a frame ? Single colour simple text ?
Any way for what it’s worth I would work it out like this-

2 panels dibond 1500x3050mm cut in half lengthways – £200
    6m 1220mm vinyl – £25
2 Hrs cutting, weeding, taping etc – £50
    2 Hrs vinyl fitting – £50
    2 people for 2.5hrs fitting – £125
    Sub total = £450+vat

Then add on your profit/contingency amount and there you have it !

I try and work out all my jobs like this and tend to be reasonably generous when it comes to time allowances. Obviously I have used £25 p.h. but you might want to charge more or less and the dibond sheet size is not exactly the right size, if you need exactly 30″ then this needs working out again as there will be loads more wasted material.

    Hope this helps,

    Nigel

just a quick reply keith, pricing not my area of day to day business. sorry 😕

regarding di-bond. i think it is an excellent product but found it to be expensive against its competition.

    di-bond – cox plastics
    rynabond – amari plastics
    alucolour – europoint display

all three are almost exactly the same. i use ryanabond most, then alucolour then di-bond when i am stuck.
it may just have been the time we went to purchase some, but shop around & compare prices. i found a large jump in cost.
also.. some have coloured faces with a white reverse. this is always handy if you have offcuts. its easier to use the white reverse sheets up than it is to find another customer wanting a red or blue sign.
another thing.. check if the finish is gloss or silk finish. these vary on the different brands.

    hope this helps some 🙂

    Thanks chaps.

With dibond and the others what are there strong points ie do they last longer than aluminium, are they stronger or is it simply a case of it just being an alternative?

    Many thanks

The strong points for the aluminium composite sheets over aluminium are

    totally flat finish
    easy to cut/machine/fold
almost zero thermal expansion/contraction (very important on long signs)

regarding the cost of dibond, it use to be expensive, but we find now that we can buy them all for the same price.
