How long? How much?
Posted by Bryan Cabrera on 27 July 2005 at 01:53As we are just starting out in the biz I was wondering if you can tell me how long this should have taken and approx how much would one charge for this. I guess the how much part is for those in the US.
I had to overlap the bottom of the starburst as our plotter cut is only 23″.
The sign is 4′ x 8′, coroplast.
The design is not mine but supplied by the customer. I had to clean it up a bit so it would cut properly.
Thanks,
Bryan

Exactly…you can’t post a picture in all of the areas.

Sorry for the blurry pic. Either too much caffine or I dropped my cam one to many times.

Is it blue corroplast or vinyl?
I’m assuming it’s just plain ‘ole calendared vinyl?

I’ve been doing this for only 2 1/2 yr’s so i’m still green but learning on every job.
Well Here’s my guess if you came in with that as a j peg and asked me to make it.
Time:
Layout 1 hr
Cut weed assemble – 2 hrs
@ 35/hr = 105.00
Coroplast marked up 16.00
8 year vinyl marked up 60.80
total 181.80I just did a 4 x 8 coro plast in one color with 5 year vinyl for 95 bucks, but it only took and hour and a half.. real simple.
I keep a time and material sheet on every job for future reference… it helps me
Hope this helps……
Oh, since Robert taught me how apply dry it’s much faster -
For the uk lot that works out at $181.80 = £104.78
Just for info

Thanks for the quick reply. It helps to get an idea of how long a job should take when you are just getting started.

Hi Bryan.
As you know, one of my nicknames is the Koro Kween.
For a 4×8 coro, with 3 colors of intermediate, grommets, and cleaning up customer art,
I would charge $150-$175 (and be lucky to get it!)
People here equate coro with cheapo.
I finally started charging $125 for a 4×8 last year.
That’s up to two colors of intermediate and my design.
Their design=more farting around with=more $.
I could have that done in a day.
(15 to 30 mins to design, an hour to cut on my 4B, 45 minutes to weed & mask, 20 minutes to stick, 20 minutes for the grommets)
Materials cost=about $30.
Some folks charge the same for coro as for an aluminum sign,
but I’d get laughed outta business if I tried that!

Jill – Is the Koro King taken yet?
I have a 1996 Sign Writers pricing guide which prices out as
$256.00 for 1 color simple block style! Now I like that pricing.quote :20 minutes to stickYour are good. I won’t tell you how long it took me.
Thanks so much,
Bryan

Yeah, Bryan…. That pricing guide is something else, isn’t it. For Quick reference, i Can usually do a job for about half of the guide… I have 2002.
As far as application time, You’ll be amazed at how fast you’ll get as you do it more. My first job.. about 7 years ago.. before i started the business was a van. 2 color, three sides with two color stripes around the whole thing. The first one took about 12 hours to apply, i recently did the same job on a new van, and applied it in 3. -
What is up with that price guide? I bought it thinking that it would make my job easier, but seems that it would rather put me out of business, as I do not know anyone who could charge the prices that the book says. I too figured that my prices are about equal to 60% of the books price on everything.
Maybe if we’d all start charging what the book says we could all retire early.
I would have charge about $175 for the sign, if it didn’t scare the customer off since it is a “temporary” cheap sign.

You guys and gals in the states seem cheap.
(not you personally, just what you charge)
Jill, you are the champion of sticking out for a fair price. but I suppose its down to the bread and butter.
I do the same, I can do a basic small van in 90minutes and charge £150. Takes about the same to do an 8 x 4 fluted, get half the dosh, and use twice the materials

Rough guess a sheet of correx at 10mm is about £20, maybe £10 for vinyl equals £30.
I sold one recently for £120.00 so that’s £90.00 for a couple of hours work.
People think that temporary must mean cheap, but the same amount of labour goes in. I think £45.00 an hour is a bargain! 🙂
-
I recently sold a metre of vinyl (COST£4) for £160.
cant do it everyday though,

PeterI think that depends where in the country you are. We are currently using approx $65.00 an hour a base for the labor.
My other job we charge $85.00/hour wholesale for design work but that located closer to the city.
Thanks all again.
