How LARGE can a Pana(style)trim frame / panel sign be ?
Posted by Dave Harrison on 28 April 2009 at 16:28Hi everyone
Would I get away with hanging two 2000mm x 1500mm composite panels in a 4m x 3m ali frame, or am I asking for trouble. . . ( my concern at this size would be the wind blowing the panels out )

Sounds dodgy to me Dave,
4 panels in one frame with the 2 x 1500 underneath each other to create the 3000 that would need some fixing at the horizontal joins.
Never seen that done before and wouldn’t sleep comfortably if I did pull that off I’m afraid.Just a thought why don’t you hang 3mtr panels portrait although still very deep would be better option.
Iv’e done some large frames in the past ie, 13000 x 1500 but with acrylic panels that was fine but didn’t have to join panels underneath each other as you would.
Sounds like a flex face job to me.
I could be wrong though

To make a sign 4M x 3M would require 4 panels at 2M x 1.5M (not two panels) and this would not be possible. You would need panels measuring 2M x 3M instead (assuming the frame was 4m wide x 3M high).
The largest join in a panatrim type sign I have done was 2.4M x 2.4M consisting of two panels of size 2.4M x 1.2M hung portrait in the frame. But this was 5mm PVC panels (as opposed to say 3mm composite) so the panels fitted the frame well.
I use hanging rails as well as a bottom rail to prevent the bottom edges blowing out. I also fitted some packing behind the join and fasten the join back onto the building through the packing. Many years later the sign is still up
But if using composite you don’t actually need the panatrim frame

Thanks for the response guys. . I must remember to engage my brain before posting next time 🙂
I wouldn’t think of fitting panels with a horizontal join, I just got all my dimensions in a muddle !
How does 3 panels @ 3000mm x 1334mm hung portrait sound ? -
That’s better.
With composite you don’t have to worry about the expansion you have with acrylic, which would be considerable at that size. I think you’ll be fine.
What are you mounting to though? If possible, I’d prefer to fix the composite panels to the building, then add some strips of aluminium as a false frame.

talking about panatrine frames
there was a comany in the sign show selling a banner stretching system to go into panatrine frames for you to supply plain or to sell out as a cheap light box.
surely anyone with an o level in physics is going to tell you that stretched (plastic) banner is going to move about like mad! wouldnt like to be this companies liability insurer ?
who’s mad me? or them? crazy guys!

Hi
Amari do 4mtr x 2mtr sheetes which would mean 1 less joint and although no good for this job Black Burn Metals can supply 4mmtr x 1.5mtr.Kev

Well pc world, curries and B&Q, and many ohers, use stretch face systems,
so are they mad?

I would consider Spritflex for this job. No joins, easy to fit and won’t blow out.

Thanks for the link Peter. A flexface system is not an option as CNC flat cut logo and text are to be added to the panels.
This is an economy option in a two part quote. . the same quote includes the correct and proper solution for the sign, a fully fabricated aluminum tray with cnc cut out logo and text with opal inserts and internal illumination.
The problem is the more I speak to the client the more I get the impression they are on a tight budget so I want to cover all bases.
The original post ( which I completely made a pigs ear of ) was to gage the opinions of others regarding this sort of size for Trim and panel style signs as I had concerns over the large joins. However after a little thought I’m confident this will be viable. To stop any movement the panels will be fitted with fingers behind the joins which interlock some of which will be fixed to the building.

Yes, but they use proper flex face systems.
I think what we’re talking about here is a flex face in a Panatrim frame.. I don’t see how that could work.
