  • How hard is it to work computer with wrong hand?

Posted by Paul Seamer on July 13, 2010 at 11:25 am

    Hi guys,
Just a quick question to see if any of you have ever had to work a computer with your wrong hand? How hard was it to get used to? And does it take twice the time that I am dreading?

I have a bad fracture to my wrist and broken scafoid and dislocated and broken lulate bone. As u can probably tell I am a little bored in hospital and been here since Sunday afternoon.

    Sorry to hear this Paul.

I am naturally left handed but learned to use the mouse with my right hand – simply because that’s the way most PCS are configured. I don’t recall it being too difficult at all when I first started using a PC, and now I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m sure you will get used to it pretty quickly.

    Good luck 😀

Only difference is with the mouse – takes a while to stop over compensating the distances.

You can flip the buttons in your mouse settings though if the natural inclination is to click with your index finger…

Twice as long…try 3-4 times longer 🙁 as accuracy takes a real dive in mouse pointer placement.

had to do it for a week or two when my carpal tunnel meant I couldn’t use my right hand or it just spasmed.

Perhaps consider buying a Tablet, with the pen, could be much easier to control, anyway speedy recovery !

    ouch! sounds painful!

guess i’d look at it this way….

A pal of mine broke his neck some years ago – i would think the term is quadriplegic-, he texts me on his mobile and he uses a computer to design… without the use of any limbs, just a stick which he operates with his mouth, using mouse and keyboard, he designs logo’s for tee’s etc without too much difficulty…..

if he can do that (ok, some years of practice), i’d feel pretty poor if i couldn’t manage enough patience to learn to use a mouse in my other hand!

i’m sure you’ll et it pretty quick!

I broke the scafoid in my left wrist a few years back now, ended up requiring a bone graft so time spent in plaster was tooooooo long. Been left handed I had to learn to use my right hand for everything and I mean everything 😮

On saying that before it happened always used my right hand and still do now when on the pc and using the mouse.

You can teach yourself anything when needs must. I recently spent 2 weeks with both hands bandaged up to the hilt. I am left handed but I didn’t realise how ambidextrous I actually am. I learn a lot about myself. I use both hands in work on my mouse, don’t even think about it. 😎

    Hi Paul

    Sympathies to you mate..

You WILL adjust to use the mouse, configure the buttons to your opposite hand.

    The human brain will adjust.

Good luck mate and speedy recovery!

    Ouch Paul…….

I’m left handed and as Phil says I too use a mouse in my right as that is how they configured when I started using comps.

And I think that being a leftie in a right handed world we get quite good at using both hands.

I’m sure you’ll have no problems.

Paul sorry to hear of your problem, heal soon, if you work for your self you will soon be able to use your other hand 😀 self employed people have no option 🙄

I broke about 5 bones in my right hand, my writing hand when I was in my last year of school. I had pins inserted.

I had to use my left hand for everything on the computer. I learnt pretty quickly and even now I can use my left hand with the mouse and to type one handed.

I didn’t change over the buttons. I left them in the same config. After a week you;ll be flying. Typing is abit slower and holding down shift + another key takes getting used to.

    Get well soon.

    I suffer with RSI
Repetitive strain injury caused by excessive use of the mouse in vectorising images
At one point I tcouldn’t even write my name it was agony
I started using my left hand to give the right a rest and I soon got used to it

a little slower of course but I could still function and carry out my work

I still feel it now and then and quite often will swap the mouse and mat over to the left to give the right a rest
