how far would you travel to quote?
Posted by Ewan Chrystal on 24 May 2014 at 00:04Strange one really. Been asked to go and quote for 5 signs for a church. But its 75 miles away. Should i be asking for travel costs up front? Never thought about charging just to quote before but i don’t want to be out of pocket too much for a job im just quoting on

best of luck ewan if you can get travel costs to quote for jobs:o i think you would need to weigh up if its worth while?? before you travel or what about a quote fee that you would remove if you get the job and say that up front??hard one as fuel/time is a huge costs now for quotes.

I would ask them to describe the kind of signs they want and the budget they have, I rarely travel more than 10miles without this information – it’s just too much hassle otherwise, they either think you’re taking the pi55 when you include your two hour site visit in the quote or the job turns out to be a £50 job that you could post for half the fuel cost with a courier!

How much do you need the work Ewan? This one will likely yield the same profit and turn over as a local equivalent job but at twice the time and effort which doesn’t really add up in economical terms.
What I do with these is to ask the customer for photos of the locations for the signs, rough idea of size of sign, then put in an estimate subject to survey. naturally your estimate will cover your time travelling on the job etc. Tell the customer if they are happy to go ahead on that basis (that the cost could increase subject to survey), then you will proceed with the works.
At that point you have to use your experience to allow enough money on the job to cover most eventualities, if you don’t get the job you haven’t lost anything.

Id do everything electronically. If the customer really isn’t messing..they will send you pics of the existing signs along with sizes and an idea of what he is after. Quote on that with a subject to survey line and if he is happy then take a drive…not forgetting to add two trips into your quote.

Yeah i’ve emailed him asking for details. I did some work for them closer to home the other week so i don’t think he’s at it But it’s still 150 mile round trip and best part of a day if its only 5 small signs.
We’ll see what he sends.
Thanks for your input
