  • How do you sell your business

Posted by John McCrorie on 19 February 2009 at 09:11

I’m a self employed Painter Decorator Signwriter, the majority of the work that I do about 80% is the decorating side.

I would like to increase work on the Signwork side of the business but don’t know the best way to go about it.
The signs i do are just your bread & butter stuff – shops, vans, honours boards & T-shirt lettering.

How & Where do you advertise your sign business?

Is it worth while thinking about a web site?

    Again thanks for your comments

    Hi John

Is your signwork with brush or with plotter?

Do you have a lettered up van, one of best forms of advertising.

Very basic website would probably help, need not cost anything, as you grow the signs side of your business the website could grow also.

For a small operator word of mouth counts for a lot.

Don’t price yourself too low otherwise you’ll find your caught in a cycle of working for next to nothing and people/customers expecting this, better not to get a job that doesn’t pay even if you want more customers…

Leaflet drop empty shops, buildings.. won’t bring instant customers but will sow the seed for the future.

All I can think of at moment (post pool match hangover)

hi John i found the best way to get business is "to get yourself out there " just pop into commercial vehicle sales depts of garages, its a good idea to take a portfolio of your work to that always helps. i ca shops etcn only speak for myself but i found the local rag totally useless but that could be just a geography thing .might be worth looking at in your area . yellow pages for me was a hit or miss but word of mouth was everything as soon as people can see what you do and trust you thell soon tell others .Ive heard people saying yell.com was a great investment might be worth looking at

    Regards brian
