  • How do you mark out text?

Posted by PatrickBoothman on 12 September 2008 at 16:14

I have been practicing a basic alphabet and found myself marking-out (in pencil) on the outside edge of where i want the brush to go.
This is working okay for a basic alphabet but any advice on marking out more complex letters would be much appreciated. 😕

You could use a grid, (I use one on tracing paper which I place over the original letter) then I enlarge the grid proportionally on the surface I am lettering and simply copy across the smaller letter. Hope that makes sense

Or maybe make a pounce pattern by drawing the lettering onto paper, going over it with a pounce wheel, taping that pattern onto your surface, and pounding graphite powder thru the holes. (you have to sand the back of the pattern with sandpaper) The graphite powder is placed in an old sock and the top fastened with tape.

You can also draw the lettering onto paper with a permanent magic marker (so it bleeds thru) tracing that on the back with a Stabilo pencil, wetting your surface, and rubbing the pattern onto it to transfer the lettering.

I usually just mark off top, bottom, and center lines and freehanding in the lettering. You get better at it the more you practice. If I am unsure, I will lightly pencil in the letters.
    Good luck!

Thanks very much. I will try and post some pictures showing what I have done already.
