  • How do you maintain your Graphtec vinyl cutter?

    Morning,

I was wondering what sort of maintenance you do to your Graphtec vinyl cutter? (excluding blades and cutting strip).

I believe the cutter’s gears sounds like they need some grease. However the manual indicates to NOT lubricate the cutter because it will get damaged. Not sure if they want to keep people away from using unsuitable grease for cutter or just to get it broken so they can sell you parts and labor to fix it but the cutter must need some grease, it’s metal on metal contact.

I can see the grease (original from factory) on the rails is running dry.

    Cheers

I used some fork grease (PACE – bike shop) as it’s so similar to the type of grease used on plastic gears and other OEM products.

    Don’t oil it…

Oil does several things if put where it ought not be.

thins down any grease, doesn’t stay on the bearing surfaces, attracts dirt & grit.

you absolutely CAN use a general purpose (3’n’1 / sewing machine) oil it if you regularly want to wipe off excess, clean off dirt buildup and make sure surfaces don’t get dry.

On my plotter and many before it, a mix of non-sticky grease for anything that rotates or moves a lot and dry lubricants for other sliding parts (pinch roller guides) that you move slide about by hand such as silicone or even old school graphite powder.

Just my personal take on it.

Yeah, that makes sense to me.
I am still wondering why Graphtec says loud DO NOT LUBRICATE IT! ❓
