  • How do you guys fit sign trays when there’s no top access?

Have a aluminium sign tray to fit soon & the location of the fascia means the top of the sign tray will be flush against the overhanging sofit ruling out the option of putting screws in the return from above.

Apart form screwing in from the face, how would you guys do it? I have an idea in my mind & one that I’ve used before, but am open to better ways that I may not have thought of (yet 😉 )

    Cheers,

    Gwaredd.

That’s OK if you only have one panel. This is a 40′ sign comprising 5 panels!

What material and how thick is the soffit?

    ah well thats different!!!

    information supplied suggests one piece!!

dont think i’d chance VHB tape!!

there is an option to use Big head fixings but again its bond to substrates and clip together!!

I would be more towards fixing from front!!

    difficult call

Drill & Tap top rail and use M6 bolts and washers and have a slot in the top of the box to match

Perhaps each panel would be located by 2 pre-fitted lugs protruding down from the top flange of the tray which would locate in to 2 right angle shaped slots in the fixing rail (like a bayonet light bulb fitting).
Start from one end of the whole sign, fit the first panel by slotting in then sliding sideways to engage in the slot, then fix at the bottom.
If the left end panel is fitted first, all slots must face left also.

Posted an image in file swapping of an idea.

You could use a stepped piece of aluminium on the wall and a corresponding piece on the top tray edge.

    Bottom as normal angle.

The top angles would only have to be say 6 inches long – you can then put the tray up and slide along to engage into the stepped piece.

I would file the opposing faces to create a slope so one slides up another to ease the install.

    Just my 2p’s worth.

    Tim.

    Cheers guys.

Whilst out shopping this Sat, I looked at all the shop fronts in the mall, & they almost all have sign trays that cannot be screwed from the top. What I did notice, was that they all didn’t quite butt up to the underside of the ledge/sofit etc, they all had an approximate 1" gap & the sign trays had either angle or a 90 degree lip machined into it allowing a screw to be inserted like so:

Bit of a cheat, but if it’s good enough for Marks & Sparks etc etc, then it’s good enough for everyone.

I do like your idea too Tim, although fitment of the brackets would have to be bob on, as there’s no scope for adjustment really, especially over a long span.

    Cheers for all your input.

    Gwaredd,

You’ve beaten me to the punch! I’ve uploaded an file onto the other thread that shows how we make sign trays when fitting under a soffit.

    Good luck!

    Guy
