Many will disagree, but Yellow Pages works for us, we ask our customers where they found us and its usually always the same reply “Yellow Pages” but I think it depends on area etc.

cheapest and best is your Van, but get it right! 😉
like carrie, we only ever advertise in yellow pages. works for us too, but i would say the bulk of our work is on refferals. -
My business is in its early stages and the Yellow Pages was definitely worth it for me. Other than that, I do get a few referrals.

Being a stubborn ole fuddy duddy, I’m probably one of the few signmakers who doesn’t appear in the yellow pages. I do advertise in the Thomson Local though, but it hasn’t been distributed yet, so I don’t know how much work I’ll get from it.
My main advertising is my shop front though, I have a basic sign and basic window graphics, but I’m on quite a busy stretch of road, so I get alot of passing trade. I also get alot of repeat or refered business, which has steadily grown over time.
The bizarre bit is I distributed several thousand leaflets about 6 months ago, nothing fancy, just text saying the services I offer. Now ppl are starting to appear, leaflet in hand. 😮 Although at the time I thought my advertising method was a flop, it turns out it was just a matter of waiting.
Rodney Gold did a brilliant post a few months back on marketing your business, if I can find the link, I’ll post it here. It outlines a complete marketing campaign with sensible tips and tricks that really do work. I have a print out of it straight facing me now and I often refer back to it when I’m planning any sort of advertising.

We also did a flyer drop into every local business and to begin with absolutley nothing, not a sausage not even a chipolata came from it …… but then a couple fo months down the line it did 😮 bizarre? We also had a lady call a few weeks ago who actually still had the original flyer from over two years ago, so flyers can work aswell.

thanks for all the advice and the links, how much is a basic listing in YP?

You’re entitled to a free entry listing. A box advert obviously costs. I have heard that prices vary from county to county. I got a 40% discount for my first year and a 40mm square box cost £189 but you are limited to only a small area for a logo.
