  • How do I make pipe sleeves with a Leister welder?

Posted by Richard Parett on 11 March 2007 at 18:47

I know some of you really like your uniplan welders and use the for finishing banners.

Can anyone give me some insight on welding pipe sleeves with the welder and a hand tool?

    Many thanks,

    D1ck Parett

Two great peoples separated by a common language! We also call it a pole pocket. We have tried to get the dealer here to explain how they think we can fold over a flap to allow some pipe to be inserted after we finish. It seems impossible to weld a straight seam without ruining the banner. Can you reveal any secrets?

ahh i see what you mean now, cheers Chris.

Richard, its pretty straight forward mate.
the flap you fold over "doesn’t" have a hem prior to folding, unlike the sides of the banner.
i have the banner welder but not the hand held finishing tool. just thought ide mention that… 😀
from memory the way this has to be done is:
you start a couple of inches in from the side and finish a few inches shy of the end of the hem/flap.
this is because if you enter or leave the flap too near the edge the banner tends to buckle in on itself as the heat melts the two sections together.
as i said, enter a few inches in and exit a few inches before the end .
you will have one long straight flap with the ends slightly flapping open a few inches.
here is where the hand held finishing kit comes in. using a firm rubber roller and the hand held kit simple run the nozzle under the end flap where you need it welded for a couple of seconds while rolling over it with the rubber roller. job done!
when i do things like this to banners i often "drill" a 5mm hole at each end and put a rivet with a washer both sides of the hole and pop the rivet. this ensures me that no tearing/pressure will begin to open the flap. its not needed but i do it as a precaution.
