  • how do I lay 2 colours of vinyl?

Posted by Chris Whitehead on April 5, 2006 at 12:31 am

Sorry to make this sounds complex everyone..

Im baffled as to how to do this, im after making a decal for a friend..

    basically as below

    www.365north.com

Thats not the exact domain, but you get the impression. I am after making 3/4 of them up and sending them to him. But I cant figure out the procedure for getting the two colours of vinyl onto the same section of application tape..

    Any advice/ suggestions gratefully recieved.

I normally use a scrap piece of backing paper
Make sure it is clean and free of fluff ‘n’ stuff

pick up your red with application tape
Lay onto scrap (allowing space either side) and trim excess applic tape
Now pick up your black text with one long piece of applic tape
(you may have cut the whole in black and just weed out the 365 in black,
should give you your exact spacing)
Now just lay it over the top of the red

    Works for me fine 🙂

    Hi
cut black & remove letters you want in red, cut red and apply application tape leaving enough tape either side to beable to cover the black. Apply red text into the gap within the black text & apply the excess application tape to black text. Works easier if you have a narrow roll of app tape rather than doing it from a 610mm log although it cabn be done. You can do each one single or multiples. Hope it makes sense can do every day but can’t explain it.

I would do the same a Kevin but interesting regarding John’s comment on waste backing paper, I use silicon release liner for transporting graphics to site as my waste bits are either wrong size or get messed up with storage and only a few companies seem to sell it now. At the risk of hijacking the thread how do others transport graphics to site – waste backing paper they store for the occassion or does their supplier do the Silicon release liner?

    Hi Alan

If you want some silicon release paper. Contact a company with a mount shop / laminator. They throw 100’s of metre’s of the stuff away every week.
