  • how do i go about cleaning a sandstone statue?

Posted by Harry Cleary on February 29, 2008 at 10:22 am

I have a job to do which involves cleaning a carved statue. It has years and years of white masonry paint which is now beginning to flake off in sheets……but only around the bottom of the statue. Does anybody know if sandblasting is the way to go on this job……will the sandstone (which to my mind is quite soft) stand up to it? If not is there any other way to clean this ‘completely’, as I don’t want ridges on it.
    Any advice?

    Hi Harry!
    Would’nt recommend sanblasting!!
decorative plasterers use a heavy jelly type stripper which dries like rubber and pulls away layers and layers of paint without damage then simply wash the residue away – you might get a tub handy
    cheers

Unlike mike i would recommend sandblasting, as I do it 😀

Look for a Farrow Systems operator, it is the rolls royce of blasters using water and grit, it is used in the restoration of many delicate items, and can strip one layer of paint at a time, they recon you can take ink of paper with it!!

    Cheers

Although messy. Nitromors? Or a heat gun & a stiff wire brush.

Thanks folks…Nitromors is not an option David as the paint is water based.

Can’t find anyone local using that system Dave. And transporting this piece isnt really an option due to weight and the risk of damage.

Anyone know the name of the product Mike Kenny is talking about?

Product Mike is talking about might be ‘ready strip’ available online from http://www.qvcuk.com. I have never used it myself but if you believe the tv add it works brilliantly.
I know that there is a Nitromors for waterbased paints… that should work… I would have thought…….

Harry it is a portable system, comes on a trailer and the last time I was searching Farrow Sytems I did see an Irish operator on the list. Do a search for Soda Blasting that will do the trick also.

I had a mate once tried to clean a statue by putting it through a car wash.
Broke the bleeding arms off didn’t it 🙄
    Customer was not pleased 😕
