Posted by Hugh Potter on 9 October 2007 at 16:10

    hi all,

this is some artwork i’ve been given, i need to fit it to a new vauxhall corsa, i can’t do a very good mock up using this big square image, so wondered if someone would be so kind as to crop it around the edge of the actual image please,

and yes… i’m poo at cropping anything other than a square !! so pleeeease !!!

    thanks in advance.

Hugh, not sure what software you’re using so this might be as useful as an inflatable dartboard. .. but here goes anyway. . . when doing layouts and mock-ups its easier to use a "clipping mask". this also offers far greater flexibility of tweaking.

Heres how I do it in illustrator. .

Import the image you want to clip/crop >make a copy of the outline vector of the vehicle making sure it has a solid fill>position the image over the vehicle outline til you’re happy>send image to back>select both the image and the outline>then go Objects > clipping mask > make clipping mask > or hit ctrl+7.

The visual effect is the same as a cropped image. . of course the image will eventually be cropped but this method is ideal for layouts where changes may need to be made !

Dave, have i ever mention to you how much like my brother you look in your avatar ? probably haven’t, but i often have a double take when i see your pic ! here’s one to compare !
