how can i stop dust, dirt & hair getting under vinyl?
Posted by Aaron & Chris on 30 March 2005 at 18:28Hi Everyone
How can we stop bits of dirt, dust & HAIRS from getting under the vinyl when applying to vans, signs and so on?
I did a job today on site, it looked great apart from i managed to get a hair under the bottom layer of the vinyl. So when i put the chrome gold over the top it stood out like a sore thumb!! (hot)
It also happens on window graphics aswell, no matter how much i clean them with meths and wash it as soon as i get the liner off something gets behind. In the workshop its alright the area is clean but on site things just go wrong!!
Does anyone know any tricks to stop the static or to stop the dust and bits from getting under or is it just something that happens? 😥
Any help or sympathey welcome 😀
Chris 😀

A Damp clean cloth gently wiped over surface should do it.
Don’t rub too vigorously or you will create static.
Clean benches before cleaning substrates.
Check clothing – foamex can be very static and attract hairs etc from clothes.
Wear overalls when cutting foamex to reduce retained dust on clothes.and above all, don’t sneeze when laying vinyl !!!

always clean substrate properly then with meths etc
clean all around the area of application too.
make sure you dont have hairs, dust, fluff etc on your jumper etc before removing vinyl from app tape.
make sure when removing app tape that you keep the vinyl high up off the ground by a couple of feet minimum.
always remove the vinyl from app tape last. just before applying.
never work in any sort of wind.when you remove vinyl from app tape it generates a static charge.
any hairs etc on your top, will jump right onto the tacky side of the vinyl.
hover the ground after removing vinyl from app tape and the dust etc will jump up onto the tacky side.
doing windows etc a common fault is clean windows but dusty window sills.
if cleaning a major issue in dusty area, use a spary bottle of water and spray a mist around the area to keep airborn particles to a minimum. -
Cheers Guys!! 😀
Basically I think we need to account for more time cleaning and preparing the surrounding area aswell as the surface.
Really I dont like the cleaning part just want to put graphics on and see the end result cos thats the best bit! 😉
Good advice but I hoped there was a cool fluid i could just spray to make everything alright. Oh well elbow grease needed! 🙁
Cheers

Don’t forget to wipe the back of your vinyl as it is the place most people forget to wipe. 😳

True!
most people (including myself, have done it often) forget that when they lay the masked vinyl down first for placement – its laying all the dust from the carrier paper onto the surface 😳 -
Shave your head.
Sell your dog.
Apply stickers in your skivvies.

We always use panel wipe on vehicles gets rid of any last bit of dust and wax (can get from any good car parts supplies)

Johnchilds is right on the button!, I know of many sign makers that use special rags called Tak Rags or Tacky rags. You can buy them at almost all motor factors or spray paint dealers. They are normally used for preparing cars before they spray them and it removes grease and dust.
