  • how can i match vinyl colour to a cmyk/hsv/rgb colour codes?

Posted by Aurbab Zafar on 12 December 2011 at 10:29

hi guys, i’m doing a shop front where i am using printed vinyl for the windows, and flat-coloured cut vinyl for other areas. i want to make sure the green shade i use in the printed vinyl matches closely to the cut vinyl (aslan 7-year C118 bright green)

i send my prints as 300dpi JPEGS (used to be pdfs but i found pdf files have trouble interpreting blends/shadows/bevels in the artwork) so ideally a correct hsv or rgb colour code to match the green vinyl would be great.

any ideas how i can do this? thanks

hi…. your best bet is to "ask" the print provider to match the green to the vinyl. Some RIPS allow the colour to be measured with a spectrophotmeter and then output nearly correct.

alternively you get them to print a pantone chart from your own colour file using your own methods of transfer, this way you can be sure of what you are getting.

With regards asking us for numbers etc… wasting your time, especially if your using Corel draw below X4

I have studied colourmanagement a lot, its difficult to acheive it, this is why we have pantone libraries (or the in case of roland printers, Roland Libraries)

You could always request a printed sample and match to a swatch book.

Some suppliers, I know metamark do, supply a CMYK mix for their series 7 vinyl, and avery supply vinyl that matches Pantone colours.

Even going through a swatch book, with your pantone swatch would be a start.

dave, thanks for the reply – ive just got of the phone and have a ‘lead’ lol

my suppliers have given me the RAL codes of all the C118 aslan vinyls they have in green, we’re down to three contenders. i have converted RAL to hsv/rgb before with excellent results, so fingers-crossed i might have cracked it. will post back. thanks

david, i have an aslan swatch on the way to me in the post but hopefully these RAL codes may provide the answer 🙂

the colours are c118/14 RAL 6018, c118/22 RAL 6032 or c118/41 RAL 6024. one of them is defo the one!

RAL? I used to match RAL to Pantone for paint reasons…. only about 40-50% of colours are matchable as they are well outside of a 4-6 colour printers gamut

my husband got me to buy a colour bridge chart after talking to someone at cadlink, cost about £70 ish from memory.

It gives the pantone colour, then by the side it gives the nearest cmyk mix

    He now swears by it……….
