    Hi All

Since it is the weekend and you all got nothing to do I am looking for some help :lol1:

I have been given the opportunity to advertise on a football pitch and need to design an Ad so that it is visible from the other side of the pitch.

    Size = 3050mm X 750mm

I have attached a copy of my business card which I usually follow for all my ad’s but it can be any other layout too 😉 (go wild but remember I only got a 610mm cutter 😕 )

I have done 2 options, 1 with all the information but think the list will be too small and useless from that far, 2nd option is simple and large but not sure if it’s missing something.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    cheers

    Warren

    hi Warren,

i’ve not dne a design or owt, but i reckon the small text will be lost, you’re probably better off with the whole name, maybe inc’d into a web address ?

Yeah, that white on black text is a little hard to read. There isn’t enough contrast between them. I recommend either using darker text or making the background darker. Just my opinion. 😀

I should have said I like the top one better too. It’s a little less cluttered.

The VERY first thing I would do Warren, is lose the gmail address, its a free google one and people know that, I see you have the domain name holdupsigns.co.uk, buy a pop3 box for it and have sales@holdupsigns.co.uk, or info@holdupsigns etc etc, It makes you look more professional having your own domain name, so make sure you have have your own email too.

ok, I just opened the eps file that was attached. The jpg that’s posted on the boards doesn’t do justice to the blue that in your eps file. I think the contrast looks good. Sorry for the previous post.

Just had a look at the eps too, I think theres too much info on the sides its a bit cluttered, vehicle graphics & vehicle lettering both dont need to be on there, neither do interior & exterior signs, same with shop fascias, & shop signs, a signmaker should be able to do all of these anyway so people will assume you do anyway, just my opinion but I think theres no need to clutter it so much with info that people will know anyway, it stands to reason you can make interior signs if you can make exterior ones etc, well it does to me anyway.
    Just my 2p worth.

    Thanks guys,

OK, I am leaving off the list as it will too small.

How’s this option, a dash of colour to make it stand out a bit 😉

I like that one. It’s very simple. How very Mondrian-esque of you! 😎

I agree with you about 80% Steve, the reason I say this is you won’t believe how many times I get asked if I do certain types of signs so I don’t think it is always obvious (maybe to us as signmakers 😉 )

If I only put shop fascia’s it does not necessarily mean I will do signs for inside the shop and I do get asked these kinds of questions. I would rather put all these down and make it clearer for the customer to know ALL the types of things I do so he does not go to somebody who has listed it as something they do. This is only on my business card anyway (and it fills the space nicely too 😕 😉 :lol1: )

Don’t want to get off track though, back to the sign design 😉

I hope you are getting it a cheap rate or it’s really just a gesture to sponsor a local boys team – football advertising slots don’t generate a whole lot of business in general.

I’ve made a few for clients & ourselves and across the board – not a jot – nada in enquiries.

Money would be better spent on 5000 flyers & getting them hand delivered to local businesses!

As a tip – nobody really reads the boards at a game unless it’s a really dull patch…and then you natter to your mates – anything more than "HOLD UP SIGNS – for all your signage needs" is maybe going to be unnecessary clutter. BIG, BOLD and BRIGHT – with as few words as possible if you are to stand any chance of it being remembered come Monday!

    Dave

ps. just noticed the second one – much clearer.

Dave the space is free (3 spaces actually but other 2 are smaller), I will be doing all their sponsors boards but had to match oppositions price and there is not much profit in it (because I have to outsource my printing 😕 😥 )

For this I also negotiated the 3 advertising spots for free. I felt that as a new business any exposure is good exposure to get my name out there while things take off. I have lots of free time at the moment which I hate and have already canvassed a 20 mile radius of where I live with business cards and stickers on empty shops & unit doors. I am not sure what else to do to advertise (will be doing flyers in a few months time but from what most people say it sometimes only covers the cost of the flyers 😕 )

So while word of mouth spreads (which it is doing as customers have told me who suggested me) I need to do whatever I can to get my name out there.

Sorry to babble on on a Friday night. :lol1: 😳

some more options below and some shadows to the other one to give it more oooohhhh!

    cheers

i have advertised for years on rugby and football pitches….the work wont fly through the door, it just keeps your company name in peoples heads, it works for me specially if its local….i made my sign sizes 24’x36" and the lettering as big as possible and keep it short and sweet, less is better 😀
also just noticed….youve mentioned the word signs 3 times no need to do so 😀

I will go with Dave on this.
Warren, are you just putting your sign up, or is it part of the deal to do the other sponsors signs as well?

spend your money on more productive advertising,
    just my opinion

As others have already said – I you want this to be read from all around the ground the lettering will need to be pretty big.

I’ve done football pitch signs for local companies and have flinched when I saw them on the pitch and realised how far away they are viewed from.
A 10ft sign is not very large from a distance.

Why not just put your web address right across the length of the sign with the message "Your local Sign Maker" underneath.

Always the same with these things – some companies just do them for just about turnover cost!

Would say flyers are very ineffectual if you target the ‘general public’ – lucky if you get 0.5% return (1 in 200 is a pretty good enquiry return rate). But by personally going in to local shops, businesses etc when you are quiet (and when they are too), reasonably smartly dressed & smiling with flyer & business cards you can increase that to maybe 1 to 1.5%. At around £70 for 5000 glossy double sided A5’s if you get just ONE van it’s all been paid for – any other enquiries are a bonus…and they will help generate ‘word of mouth’ sales. Even going to a ‘boy racer’ meet if there are any official ones nearby and handing out flyers will probably get you a LOT of rubbish, but a few who are prepared to spend a fair bit of getting what the want.
After a while – you’ll be doing mainly word of mouth & recommendations – and then the client base grows.

    Hi All

    All with great valid points.

The margin I make on doing the paid advertising boards is minimal but I thought if I don’t lose money I not only get 3 signs to display around the pitch (going in to football season) I also get to take down the oppositions adverts 😉

It is for my local football club (Winchester Football Club) and it is less than a mile from my house. They want to keep everything local to Winchester and that’s why they contacted me (they were actually referred to me by one of my other local oppositions because they do not do these sort of signs 😉 ) When I gave him my first price he came back saying he would have to keep it with the other company, I then negotiated the 3 spaces for advertising which normally costs about £800 so I felt it was a good way to have my name out there and get some turnover, who knows it might become more profitable the more I find cheaper suppliers to supply me the prints (or buy my own printer) 😉 :lol1:

If it is a vinyl only sign then there is good profit to be made but with digital print it barely covers the costs 😥

One final deal clincher was that I will have direct contact with all the advertisers so hopefully can generate some more work that way 😉

    cheers

Taking Phill’s advice, If I leave the tel no in it has the Winchester dial code so they would know it’s local, or am I presuming wrong 😕

People also often tend to put a tel no into their mobiles so might be good to have it on ???
