  • how can i apply sunstrips to a curved windscreen?

Posted by Mark Stead on 22 June 2006 at 18:17

    Hi all

I have been asked to do a rush job for a car show this weekend. A company want a load of sunstrips producing. This may be very easy but I just don’t know how to work out the curve on the cars window as its my first job of this type and I won’t see the cars until they pick them up.

    Many thanks

    😀

    Couple of things.

Are the sunstrips blank, printed with text or cut vinyl text?

Do you know the desired finished height of the fitted strip?

As a rough guide. If doing sunstrips I need to know the required height & width. Then cut slightly OVERSIZED strips of vinyl to account for the curvature & fit. No pre curving – just excess removing at the top & sides. To find out all the dimensions & curvature you’ll NEED to check against the vehicle, or at least the same model – there’s no universal formula. You could try a ‘template’ using a scrap piece of backing paper to give you the curves.

Hope that helps a wee bit

    Cheers Dave

Thats been very helpfull. I was trying to make the curve and not use straight cut vinyl. Makes it alot easier.

    Many thanks

Sunstrips are the core of my business at the moment (BIG order!), and all those are cut straight, resulting in an 8 inch strip at the edges of the screen and 6 inches in the centre. If I am asked to do a curved sunstrip, I ask what make and model the car is, as most windscreen curves are different.

    Hi Mark,

I have done more of these than anything else – boy racers!

One tip I have found out if you are placing text onto the background is to place it fairly low as all of the excess cut off is at the top! – might sound obvious but I am blond!:lol1:

I’ve done a few and cut them straight, pretty such spot on as David says 😀

We make and fit these all day long and just cut a strip 1250 x 180 and trim on the glass and apply lettering afterwards. The curve finish you get will vary from car to car. Some look really curved but are in fact straight.

we charge €30 for the visor and text fitted, If the logo is two colours we charge 35 and if they want to fit it themselves then knock off a fiver, we do 15 – 20 of these a week
