I have just thrown a black and a blue enamel out because it dries out and become to allot of smalls lumps. How do you prevent the 1shot lettering enamel drying out in the can’s? Some tips or tricks?

Hi Lars, you could store the tin upside down so any skin that forms is then at the bottom of the paint when you open the tin. Be careful with this method though for obvious reasons.

Also with a new tin, drill a hole in the lid and put a self tapping screw in. No need then to take the lid off every-time, just take out the screw, pour out your paint and replace the screw. This reduces the amount of evaporation of the paint solvent.

I know people who take a new can, open it, throw in a stainless steel bolt or nut, tightly reseal, and put a screw into the top of it.
You shake the paint to stir it.
Then unscrew the screw and pour the paint out through the screw hole.
    Then re-insert the screw.
I have a can someone gave me which is old enough to have a faded label, but I can still pour nice paint out of the screw hole in the top.
    (Thanks Joe Chips!)

    Lars,

    Jill got it mostly right.

I never open the can…..I put a hex head sheet metal screw (#8 1/2") into the lid about 3/8" from the edge. After shaking the paint real well, turn it upside down…..remove the screw….squeeze the can like the old oil cans…..replace the screw before you turn it right side up again.

The air that does get in, picks up the solvent and will not form a skin on the paint……ever. You will get all the paint out…..even if it takes years.

    Joe,
