  • Hiring an inexperienced installer…

    Hi everyone!
I was i run through all of you a thought that I have.
I recently hired a new installer and seeing that one can’t find an experienced installer anywhere near us it had to be someone without experience. The tricky part is deciding how long one should try this person out. We set out a 3 month period for him to learn and show us his learning capabilities. Right now he has started to do small stuff and we will hopefully give him more as he gets better.
What are your thought about it, does it sound reasonable? How did you do when you hired your first inexperienced installer?
I’m interested in hearing all the insight you may have and thought you can give me!

    Thanks!

    Hi Simon
Providing he is reasonably handy, reasonably intelligent, keen to work and keen to learn and that you or another experienced person can show him the right way to install, then I think 3 months is about right as long as he has enough variety to learn from

Hiring inexperienced fitters, of whatever age, is the way I prefer to set on new staff.

That way we can train them to do things the way we want them done, and not in the maybe bad habits they might bring with them.

Three months should be plenty for you to know if they are going to make the grade, but just one word of warning. Keep an eye on the calendar because three months soon passes, and it is possible for you to miss the opportunity of getting rid of them if they aren’t going to make the grade.

I don’t know about the laws in your country but here, if we go over the deadline then they are deemed to have passed the probationary period and to have a full time job. Then it’s difficult to get rid of them.
