    Hi!
I am a designer, and enjoy doing graphic work, websites, etc. for work as well as a hobby.

One day I decided to start doing car graphics, that was about 2 weeks ago.
I have purchased a vinyl cutter / plotter off eBay and that’s where I am.

Within the next couple of days, It should be delivered.

As I have absolutely no experience or contacts that have experience, I have come here!

I am confident using Adobe Illustrator, but as far as using it with a cutter, I have no idea what It will be like. I hope I can work things out as I go along.

I originally presumed a vinyl cutter would cut vinyl only… so I thought designs would have to be minimal in colours. But I was told recently that they can also print… whether this is just to print onto larger paper, or onto the vinyl, i have no idea. Do you?

Also, vinyl cutting, and wrapping.. do they use different vinyl? can they be used in the same machine?

Sorry about all the questions, but I’m a newbie, any help would be very much appreciated. And hopefully I can pick up a lot on my own as i go along.

One last question – any links to references, tutorials, supplies, tools (other than the cutter) i will need, are appreciated!

    Thank you

    Hi Michael and welcome.

There isn’t a five minute answer to all your questions – you will need to spend time getting all of the answers (which are most likely all answered on this very site here).

A vinyl cutter will only cut vinyl – it will not print. There are also combination printer/ cutters such as the versacamm which will print and cut vinyl, but these are more expensive than a simple vinyl cutter.

Good luck in your journey into signs 😀

Welcome along, im sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us. Remember that half the fun is figuring stuff out for yourself, this site and its members are a great resource but you cant beat the feeling of doing it by yourself.
