    Hi all,

Just joined up and looking forward to exploring what looks like an amazing site when I get enough time.

My name is Nigel and I took over a signmaking business about 2 years ago on the Isle of Skye. I discovered this site when I did an internet search for my shop – Vital Signs – just out of curiosity and was amazed to find a discussion on here about my business!!

I just wish I knew about this site when I started as I fell out with the guy that sold me the business the day I took over so never got any training 🙁 . So i was stuck with a computer, a plotter some scraps of vinyl and foamboard and did not have a clue about anything – how to use the software let alone getting the plotter to cut it was a nightmare and applying was a total mystery. I didnt know where to get materials or even what they were called. What was worse I actually had some customers that were waiting for advice and some previously ordered signs, the pressure was on. 😥

I managed to get through and teach myself everything (although i probably know nothing) and the business is doing well and getting a good reputation for quality signs. 🙂

No doubt I do things very different from most folk and it will be great to find out just what the ‘norm’ is or better ways of doing things and better materials and tools to use.

    Cheers

    Nigel

    Hi Nigel,

Sounds like that was fun.. still you got through it and have learned a valuable lesson, you can only really rely on yourself.

    Hi there,

Welcome on board, I can see you got thrown in at the deep end there mate 😕 I had a similar initiation to the industry myself, albeit not an existing business, but you’d be amazed how you can often find the most effective way of doing a job just by spending a few years trying different ways and making mistakes along the way.
Having said that , I’m sure everyone on the site has learnt something from the wealth of experience available here.

    Nigel (your namesake 😉 )

    Hi and welcome Nigel,

I’m a newbie to the sign trade and can honestly say I’ve learnt everything I know to date about sign making from UKsignboards and the members that reside here. The members here are knowledgable, informative and always willing to lend a hand (even when you ask numb skull questions like I ask 😉 ). Add to that the resources supplied by members in various forums, the ‘demo’ section (solid practical tips and advice on everything related to signmaking) and the newly added ‘Design’ forum, UKsignboards is ideal for the new start or existing signmaker.

Sorry to hear about the rotten start you had in your business. Sounds convienient for the previous owner to argue with you and drop all support to you 👿 but as Nigel @ Creative Signs and Simon have said, you managed to pull through and no doubt after 2 years you know your business inside out. I look forward to your input to the boards. Being self-taught like many members here, you’ve probably had to improvise more than once 😉

    Cheers, Dewi

Welcome Nigel, I think most people find the site by accident, I did and now I live here, it is unbelievable for info and the people are terrific.

I am just down the road from you in Oban, just about to set up my own shop when a get premises.

Give me a shout if you are heading this way.

Where abouts on Skye are you?

Hi Guys and thanks for the welcome.

Yeah I think my start in the business was for the best (though I didnt think so at the time) and right enough Simon you can only rely on yourself and the most effective way to find the best method is make mistakes and keep trying. Must have been a great help Dewi knowing this site was here to fall back in the beggining.

Apart from the same name Nigel, we seem to have a similar attitude too (great signature), in fact there is even a resemblance….. and Dewi registered with UKsignboards on my birthday….. and Dave lives just down the road!!

Dave – i’m in Portree in the main street. There was a sign business in Oban for sale recently did you buy that or are you going to start in competiton? Will give you a shout if I come down, was down this summer and the last come to think stayed in the hotel that was raffled off cant remember the name (Kimberely was it) bought some tickets but didnt win it. Give me a shout too if your up this way.

    Cheers

    Hi Nigel,

I worked for that sign company was negotiating the purchase of then someone else stepped in with higher bid. We didn’t see eye to eye so I left to set up on my own. I have two other part time businesses so this self employed lark is no stranger to me (used to farm mussels as well)

Don’t think that guy got enough tickets sold for the Hotel so it is still his.

I used to sell insurance (you will probably know CICA, Aaaaarr, do I hear you say) on Skye so I know a few people Probably met you at some time.

    Cheers

Yer there is room for another full time sign shop. I was doing 50-56 hours last year to keep up with the work and people were still waiting a minimum of 2 weeks. Another full time sign maker left in 2002 to teach, so to fill the gap guys are coming in from Stirling, Glasgow, Fortwilliam, Inverness, and Campbeltown to the odd jobs.
