Hi everyone
Posted by Dave Bruce on 24 December 2003 at 11:11Hello to all you signers, finally got accepted on to this site (second attempt) Rob obviously didn’t like my initial username!
Anyway since I found this forum I have been like a kid with a new toy, you guys are doing a fantastic job, and it is very interesting to hear your problems.
I have been sign making for just under 2 years after having a couple of hours training. I worked for the local sign company which I was looking to buy, but someone made a better offer so here I am setting up a new company. 🙂
I see myself as an excellent problem solver, I can turn my hand to most things and, for my sins, I am a perfecs…perfictio…..perfetcionist! (perfectionist, just in case you thought I coudnt spill)
Biggest headache at the moment is trying to decide which Signlab to buy. I use Corel 10 (but just bought 11) and signlab ES2, but have problems importing and the time it takes to do things in Corel is rediculous (although I am a novice). So do I go the whole hog and spend £2000 or just upgrade a couple of steps for £850? I am hoping to start doing some wide format printing so that might influence which package to go for.
Look forward to chatting with you all next year, I’m off to tidy up for tomorrow.
All a have a great festive season.
CheersDave

Hi Dave and welcome to the boards! 😀
I wish you luck in setting up your new business. I too am just setting up on my own and I’ve found people here to go above and beyond helping with practical advice, tips&tricks, and generally pointing you in the right direction.
There is a thread on SignGo which may be of interest to you as price wise this is far less than Signlab, and it seems to be pretty similar in features etc.
Look forward to reading more from you Dave 😀
Cheers, Dewi

Hi Dave
Welcome from another relatively self taught, solo-self-employed sign maker.
I use SignLab and find it very good. I bought the asset of another signmaker with that included, but I don’t think I would have bought it were I strting with a totally clean sheet.
All the best for your new venture
Alan

Hi Dave and welcome to the UKSG, as has already been said most of us can’t spill so don’t worry about it. I hope you get as much out of the boards as I do, good luck with your new venture.

Hi Dave…
What was your first choice of usernames? Robert the Bruce? Har-de-harhar. Just in a goofy mood as I have yet to drink some coffee & am still hung over from the 6 beers I drank Friday night! (my usual limit is 4)
I am a self-taught painter as well as a stickerpimp. The man who installed my Gerber system was supposed to teach me for 3 days but he was too busy installing my printer & eating pizza. Every hard-won skill I know, I learned myself!
I would recommend getting Mike Stevens’ Mastering Layout book if you don’t already have it. After I read it the first time in 1993, I wanted to burn everything I had done before then.
And you have a fan in me…as Robbie can attest, I love Scottish men! Nuthin like a man walking about in overalls and those boots you guys wear…my my my. If American beer, bread, and coffee was as strong as Scottish, our men would be completely different here. You can keep that nasty sweet corn tho!
Love- JILL 😉
(oops! spelled Mastering wrong!) -
Hi Jill,
Chillinutman was my first name sort of combined from Chile (I was there for a year) and being relaxed (chilling out man).Did you know that 75% of the S.A.S is made up of Scots! Don’t get too excited your computer won’t like it.
Have you seen the Beagle probe yet it is in your neck of the woods (Mars)?
Where can I get Mike Stevens book and I’m interested in The Secret of Design too? (think that is a CD)Sorry but I have thrown out my rigger boots, I now wear police boots.
cheers
Dave

Dave, I know its a pain sometimes but IMHO Robert does a good job of controlling the boards and rejecting peoples applications due to names or missing details helps to make the boards what they are.
You can find the design book on amazon, I have heard a lot of people say it is a really useful design tool.
As for the secrets of design yes it is a CD and well worth having, it is by a guy called Mike Brown, formerly Mikethesign on these boards.
I dont know if he is still on the boards or not but I know some of the other members have his e-mail address.Jill “what is a stickerpimp” or shouldn’t I ask !!!

Don’t worry, I might be sticky but i ain’t a ‘tute! And I do pester & puzzle people.
We call licky-sticky sign shop owners by that title. You know, places like FASTSIGNS NOW, etc., “sign” franchises. Places that specialize in all-caps Brush Script in red on a white background. (I hope I am not cheesing anybody off!)
I like a good sticker as well as anybody, but the work done by some of these joints is appalling. There is one just up the street from me. I try to make my vinyl signs look as good as a painted one, it’s all in the layout. The Mike Stevens book is a great layout/color tool.
And Dave…I like police boots too! My dad was a magistrate with his office in our house. I grew up around cops!
As for chillinutman…I can see why Rob wasn’t too keen on that nickname! Kinda gives me a shrinking feeling! 😳
Dewi, thank you for going that extra mile with the dictionary, dude!
Love- JILL -
😀 😀 Jill 😀 😀
I tried to do the whole pronunciation thing on it 🙁 Didn’t work. Love to hear stickerpimp in an American accent though 😉
Cheers, Dewi

😛
Dewi (a.k.a. Sting…as in tantric? haha)
In my best Pittsburgh accent:
StikkkkerrrrPIMP!
dunno my county code…but my phone # is 724-586-6923
Anyone can call me anytime if they wanna hear a bad accent!
Love- JILL -
Jill, thanks for explaining that, so how did the name come about or don’t you know. Somehow I dont think it would bother you to much if you were cheesing someone off. I know exactly what you mean though. Theres a sign company near me that has a banner up saying Need a new sign, why pay more. I keep wanting to write on it Because yours are crap, but I havent got the nerve.
-
Martin,
I really don’t know who coined the term, I heard it on Letterville.
And I might talk tuff, but I would be mortified if I offended ANYONE.
I think I saw that banner when I was in Cowdenbeath!
Love- JILL 😆 -
lol hey Jill i guess you don’t realise that robbie works for or is part of a fastsigns company. Only difference is he is the real McCoy
I got that Mike Steven’s book for Christmas but i can’t comment as of yet as i’ve not read it cover to cover

Afraid I am actually. Thankfully! Our company has nothing to do with the franchise group fastsigns.
We are “Limited” and independent sign company with no ties what so ever with the franchise group. Infact, our company is the reason there is not any fastsigns franchise companies in Scotland.
When I say our, I mean my fathers & i. Although I am a director my father owns it.
Having said that he does wish to retire at some point this year..No offence taken. 😀
i found a site with tons of signwork books.. god i cant rmember now. hope i bookmarked it. 🙄
