  • Help with vinyl to put on lightbox

Posted by Moey Indhera on 9 May 2011 at 16:40

    Hi all,

About to do my first light box. I am using a square opal/white perspex sheet whith regular vinyl to block light, apart from 2 small rectangles approximately 10cmx15cm x 2. I am looking to print flags on these 2 rectangles on vinyl to light up at night. I dont have backlit vinyl and have never used it before either. I was thinking would printing on normal clear vinyl do the trick and sticking it on to the opal sheet. what difference would the result be as opposed to printing on back lit vnyl??

    Thanx In advance

    Mo

See no reason why that wouldnt work. As for lightbox vinyl as far as i know it just comes out better. more vibrant with the colour.

    Regular vinyl won’t block light!

As Tim has already said a normal/regular vinyl such as Oracal 551 will not block out light, try it yourself and you will see. Obviously a thicker film will allow less light through but will not stop it 100% if that’s what you are trying to do. Translucent vinyl which is what should be used on lightboxes will be brighter and the colours will generally look pretty much the same if the box is switched on or off. It is generally more expensive which is probably why some people don’t use it and just use a calendered vinyl instead.

As for printing on clear, you will probably need to lay the ink down fairly thick to stop it looking wishy washy when lit. If you haven’t done it before best to print a test to see how it turns out before doing the actual job.

You can use regular vinyl on the front face IF you have light block / stop vinyl applied to the rear face of the panel.

Obviously you cut the light stop out from the areas you wish light to pass through.
