  • Help with large aluminium sign…

Posted by Nigel Fraser on 15 February 2004 at 15:35

Hi, just wondering if anyone can suggest a good manufacturer for a sign project I have to quote/do shortly.
There is an existing internally illuminated curved face aluminium sign on the building overall size of 4825mm accross by 3000mm high. Returns are 50mm at each edge and 340mm in the centre. Logo fret cut out of face with acrylic backing sheet on inside of tray.
I have to make and fit a new face onto the existing back tray, but the size and the illumination make me a bit concerned about getting a decent manufacturer so it all fits together nice and neat with a minimum of joins.

Any suggestions would be welcome 😕

    Hi Nigel,
Does the new face that you are quoting have to have the same curved fascia or is the customer open to your suggestions?
I have been involved in similar projects before and just because the face is curved you may find that the back tray have the same sized returns (50mm) all round. This is how i have produced them in the past with just the face having the profile.
I do all my own machining of the face panels and get a local company to do the fabrication for me, it’s not going to be a cheap project though..

Yes, I think you’re probably right Mike. I couldn’t see the construction well enough to tell without taking the whole thing apart. I guess they wouldn’t really be that bothered about having a curved face again, as long as it looks ok and is cheaper !.
So maybe your right about just going for the flat version . I think the face will still have to be in three parts though at the size it is.
I told the customer it would probably cost between 1-2K to give them an idea and he seemed to take it ok 😕
I’ll have to make some enquiries tomorrow and see who I can get to make up the tray.

    Thanks,

It sounds like you should be using a Flex Face sign system on a sign that size. Get it digitally printed with a liquid laminate.

Thanks Mike, that was one of the conclusions I came to yesterday too, unfortunately I got a price for one and the final ~£3000+ tag was too much for the customer. So we’re back to a simpler solution – ditch the backlighting and reface the existing tray in dibond then fit both up and downlighters on to this tray – sounds easier to fit too !

No Rob, its a local car dealer site that has been taken over by the garage/repair shop next door and they just started an Isuzu Truck franchise – great source of business 😀 I think they are going to sell cars + trucks from the site though.
