  • help with a scooter wrap please?

Posted by dale smith on 30 May 2009 at 09:31

Hi there ive been asked about doing a full wrap on a vespa scooter. im not a vinyls man myself but the bloke is a good customer of mine & i get quite a bit of work off him so i said ill get it done for him. the only problem is the bloke is worried about fade as hes heard that the wraps are only guaranteed for 18 months.is this only on certain winyls or does it apply to them all.any help appreciated as im a bit out of my depth with this one.

    Hi Dale
You don’t say if the wrap is a printed one or not, it’s the print that has lower life expectancy than cast vinyls used with wraps… with lamination and current solvent (even eco-solv) inks you’re likely to get double the 18 months at least for a print in this climate i.e. no sun…. 10 years + for a non print vinyl wrap.

unlike a van etc a scooter will spend probably 80% of its life in a garage under cover, so life is extended.

Also, explain to the customer that a printed wrap isn’t designed to be a long term fitting – the whole point is that they are relatively short term, if he wants a permenant change, that is what paint is for.

Although as noted above, I would suggest a minimum of double the rated lifespan for a scooter as it isnt going to be subjected to the same amount of sunlight and abuse as something like a van.

as long as its laminated you should get around 3 years on print life.
but that’s using a reputable ink with a reputable wrap laminate. not just a "clear vinyl" as the laminate.
proper laminates contain UV filters that help protect from sun bleaching whilst the laminate itself prevents abrasion and chemical attacks on the print.

use only a proper wrap vinyl with "equivalent" over laminate.
the bike must be properly degreased from grime, polish etc. e.g. Isopropyl alcohol with lint free cloth.
fit 100% dry and cure with a proper heat gun to a around 110+ degrees.
be careful wrapping prints over the likes of the petrol tank as it is easy to over stretch and lighten the print, showing obvious colour changes in the image/graphic as a result.

Hi Dale, this is one we did a while ago for a dealer.

As long as the print is laminated there shouldnt be any issues with fade.

    Cheers

Hi, for something like that we would charge around £125.00 supplied and fitted to the dealer and probably around £175.00 to the end user.

This would of course include any cost for artwork etc.

    cheers

done with a laminated cast using clear to improve lifespan. I would not include artwork in charge as complicated design can take time and may require hand templating. Also these can be difficult to strip/take apart for fitting if needed.

    2 sq m print
    4hrs fitting onsite
    12 hrs artworking

£ as much as you can!
