  • Static electricity shocks when laminating, help needed please?

    Good day folks.

HELP – Static electricity shocks when laminating.

I’m flooding big prints on dibond panels.

When I trim the edge, I get rather strong static electricity shock. Not pleasant. Today they seem more powerful than yesterday.

    Any solution to this? TIA

I find the weather has an influence on how bad the static is at work. The main thing though is what you’re wearing on your feet. Certain shoes of mine are now banned from being worn as they cause terrible static shocks.

    I just tried:

    1) shoes

    2) no shoes

    3) flip flops.

No difference. I get quite powerful shock.

Funny, but this stops being funny. I get lightheaded from the shocks.

We find that we get shocks when using Metamark, but not when using Orajet. Odd.

DiBond is a capacitor. It gets charged up when sheets rub together, when peeling the protective skin, and when the bonds of the adhesive are broken, when it’s removed from the lining.

Low humidity really helps to promote the charge (do you have heating / AC on?). A dehumidifier can help, as can running a string of tinsel https://fraser-antistatic.com/products/801-anti-static-tinsel/.

Footwear – depends on the floor material. If the floor is isolating you, then the charge still gets you.

i try to remember to short the two faces of the Dibond with a scalpel before touching it, when it’s just gone through the laminator. Try to, almost never remember to.

Kapa mount does the same thing, and the thicker the insulating (core) material of the board, the bigger the charge, the greater the kick from the spark. 6mm Dibond on a dry day can be really fun.

Exactly the worst case scenario. MD3 & 6mm Dibond. 🤘

I use Metamark and when laminating i always get sparks between the front of the laminator and my large belly, just one of those things, if it does not discharge through my tummy then at the end when i touch the bed i get a discharge through my fingers. Just learnt to live with it.

I’ve just wrapped 27x 8×4 panels and felt like that poor guy getting fried in “The Green Mile”. There has to be a solution to this, my heart can’t take much more 🙁

🤣 the solution I found was simple in the end. Delegate.
