help please with a firefox browser problem?
Posted by Robert Lambie on 16 June 2008 at 18:12I folks…
just looking for a bit of feedback here. For some years now i have swayed away from using firefox for several reasons, but mainly just down to how settings in it conflicted with how i run UKSB. around 6 months ago i switched over to it after updates allowed me to alter the settings more to suit how i browse the net and run the boards. however, over the past couple of weeks firefox now keeps crashing on me… i thought it maybe just a setting issue again but its also happening to me on my work computer also. before i go tinkering with settings all over the place and screwing up my PC’s and wasting time i don’t have… has anyone else been experiencing same? it doesn’t happen on my mac of course as its a different browser but does happen on two computers, one at home and the other at work.
any feedback much appreciated. 😀

I use Firefox all the time and have never had any problems. 😕

Lately I have found that if I have more than one tab open that it will begin chewing up all the cpu and eventually require me to exit it. I put it down to an oldish laptop but maybe not.

Been using it for 10 months or so, I did Hugh P’s changes to optimise for broadband and never had any problems with the boards…..touch wood!!

I’ve used firefox at work for the past couple of years and have only recently had a few firefox needs to close errors
I’ve got no explanation for them but I can’t remember that ever happening before

I;ve had it crash on me a lot lately but I do have some sort of malware on my PC at the moment which I can’t get rid of. Have you done any AV scans?

Version 3 is slated to be released tomorrow. Which is to address numerous problems, some of which you’ve called out.

…ditto!
Been using firefox for years now, again no probs here! (touch wood)

Rob, if you like your MAC browser, install Safari for Windows, it even has a MAC feel. I’ve used Firefox for some time, but also enjoy some of the functions of Opera.
As a web tinkler, I like to check all our sites in the different browsers for compatibility, its amazing how the different browsers handle different web elements of some sites.

Hi Rob,
I use a few browsers being a web designer/developer as well as a printer (a man of many hats).
Can’t say I’ve ever noticed any problems similar to what your describing. What OS you running? Is it a particular website that’s causes problems, any other common denominator?
If you like Firefox you’ll love Google Chrome, I highly recommend it even though its still in beta, faster then any other browser I know and I’ve not encountered any problems. Give it a whirl…

Maybe you noticed when it crashes (viewing videos, streaming, flash etc), does it depends on a site your are visiting?
Maybe you installed new add-on’s recently? -
I just changed over to Firefox today, fairly impressed with the speed etc so far.
Dad had Chrome installed for about a week, uninstalled it on friday as it had so many crashes, he was getting very frustrated. He has gone back to Opera which he loves.
I’ll stick with this for a while and see how it goes

are / were there not issues with google chrome? something to do with copyright, ie, they have permission to use absolutely anything, for any purpose, free of any copyright constraints, if it’s been uploaded through their servers?
even if they’ve changed that now, they tried it. not for me!

The latest version seems to be CPU hungry ever since I installed he latest one I hear my disk churning away especially when you first boot firefox up.
Thinking of going back a version. -

How do you do that Gordon? Mine starts to chew cpu dramatically after being open for a while.

I haven’t tried it yet but was going to uninstal 3 and install 2 as I have it on my pc don’t know if it will work tho.
-
Uninstalled version 3 and went back to version 2 a million times better don’t know what they’ve done to it but 2 is certainly a lot faster than 3
