  • Help please on choosing board to apply Vinyl Graphics to

Posted by Nigel Pitt on 2 December 2009 at 10:17

    Hi All,

This is probably a classic newbie question which has been answered many times before but I am becoming increasingly confused by all the threads I read about this subject unfortunately.

I have a customer who would like me to make up some sign boards for the outside of their premises. He is looking for a white board with a number of vinyl graphics applied.

It’s to be fixed to a brick wall and obviously needs to be able to withstand our typical British weather.

He has spoken about an aluminium board but I have read a lot about composite board being a preferred option. None of the sites I’ve found seem to detail much about the type of applications their board can be used for.

Any advice is very gratefully received.

    Hi Nigel

3mm composite aluminium board (Dibond, rynabond, skybond etc) is perfect, or use Foamex but this is not as rigid and is more prone to warping so use a 10mm thick piece. All your local sign suppliers should do them in some sort of form.

    cheers

3mm aluminium composite all the way! Ally sheet is too flexible and attractive to thieves. Composite board is ready to apply the graphics to, easy to handle, drill, cut etc and comes in a range of colours. It’ll last years and is cheaper than 10mm foam board. No contest.

Composite is the best all rounder…

I have to say I am well impressed with the speed of the responses to this, my first question on here 🙂

Thanks guys for the great advice, I feel a lot more confident now in pricing this job on composite.

One further question though, is this stuff easy to cut to size, and is there anything I should be mindful of when working with it?

Very easy to cut, you can cut it with a stanley knife.

5mm Foamex or derivatives (expanded PVC) Will warp between fixings in the sun in no time, and 10mm will not be much better(I have photo’s of one of my signs in 10mm looking terrible!)

Composite 3mm in any of the brands will work really well, doesn’t go grey – dirt in the tiny crevices – and doesn’t warp. Best bit is it is about the same price as 10mm foamex but much better all round.

Big Thanks to everyone who has responded to this, it gives me loads more confidence to go ahead and offer this to customers now.
Time to ask for some samples now I think?

Bit late with a reply, but composite is great (alucobond or dibond) but don’t forget when you apply that these substrates do move quite a bit in the heat, so allow some spacing when you drill for your fixings to allow for thermal expansion.

Probably not a thing you guys are thinking about in Europe ATM but It’s on my mind right now 😉
