    Good morning ……..

We run a Dahlgren SYS-2516 engraver. We are currently having problems
engraving brass plates. Whatever settings we change the edges always
burr. We always used to sharpen our blades to 45 degrees and be able
to engrave pretty much any depth and run the machine as fast as we wanted.

We’ve recently had to sharpen our blades to 60 degrees and it works
‘most of the time’. Not sure if anyone has any tips ??

We have no problem engraving stainless steel on the same machine.

    Cheers.

First question is where did you get the brass???? When I started I used brass sheets supplied as just brass sheet and had the same problem. Engraving brass is categorised as "half hard" and should cut very smoothly without any lubricant and since switching to engraving brass Ive not had any problems. If you are sharpening your own cutters you may need to adjust the other angles too, clearance, rake etc…….will look these up later and post tonight.

I use a Dahlgren Wizzard 2000ST on a medium XY speed and 3/4 spindle speed. Only cut down .03 to .05" at a time. I use standard Suregrave cutters.

    Hope this helps

Definatlely sounds like the brass to me if the machine is OK ON stainless.

    Hi Ady

I’m new to this, just wanted to no haw you got on with the ‘Half Hard’ Brass. I have been working in this industry for 12 years and was always been lead to believe that you actually need ‘Hard’ brass for engraving.

Look forward to hearing from you

Try Pantograph Services, Leeds or Engravamet (I think they are in Nottingham). both supply CZ120 polished brass in various thickness.
In 1000mm x 600mm sheets or cut to size.

Could also try http://www.Mastergrave.co.uk, http://www.Suregrave.co.uk and http://www.Gravograph.co.uk, they all do full sheets (4′ x 2′) or cut to size in various thicknesses.
